Supposedly the man who killed the auteur era of Hollywood.

The director of the 1978 Vietnam War film The Deer Hunter has died, his friend and former lawyer has confirmed.
Double Oscar winner Michael Cimino's body was found at his Los Angeles home on Saturday, Eric Weissmann said.
Cimino, 77, who directed a total of eight films, will be remembered for a career of highs and lows.
While The Deer Hunter has been hailed as one of the best movies in Hollywood history, his next project, Heaven's Gate, was derided as a flop.

Never saw Heaven's Gate, but I did watch The Deer Hunter a few years back, and I thought it was pretty bombastic and implausible in its own right. Suffice to say I'm pretty skeptical about the idea of for-profit, multinational-owned "Russian Roulette" bars in Indochina.
Sunchaser, the only other film of his that I've seen, was passable entertainment. No surprise it was straight-to-video, however.

I remember when Heaven's Gate came out. It immediately became a synonym for massive flop. It had a budget of $44 million in 1980 dollars. That would be about $117 million in today's dollars. Adjusted for inflation it only made about $12 million. So it easily lost $100 million in today's dollars.
Wiki suggests when adjusted for inflation it's about the 7th worst financial disaster.

People keep trying to resurrect the Western and they keep failing. It's like "maybe this $100 million investment will bring back flappers and spats". It's dead. Dead. Dead. |

Yeah, I think the last great heyday was the late 60s/early 70s, with the spaghettis, Butch and Sundance, and the Sam Peckinpah films. But I think those are all classified as revisionist anyway.
And of course Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven both won Best Picture. Though I don't really think of the former as a western(a lot of the requisite tropes are missing). |
