|
|
Assah!, I coerced my director into letting me teach my kids songs of my choice. I'm pretty handy with a guitar and have a few songs in mind but it's kind of dificult as the song I chose for this month, Knocking on heaven's door, is a little hard for some of them. This is a bit of a bummer as I was hoping to intro them to a bit of Bob Marley, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens later on, and my choice of song for next month was going to be Hey Jude but some are struggling with KOHD so hey jude would be a real mission.
Anyone else doing something along the same lines?, If you are musically inclined I would really recommend talking to your director about starting something like this as it's a great time filler and the kids seem to really enjoy it. Another great thing about it is that you can bum out any little smart asses that are giving a bit of stick by making them stand up and sing by themselves.
So what songs do you think I should try?....my supervisor was keen on having 'one in a million' by westlife or boyzone or whoever they are. she gave me the words for the song and it looks more like a fricken monologue than a song to teach 12 year old koreans. |

People at the school I used to be at taught a lot of early Beattles stuff, some Elton John, and James Taylor. They seem to go over pretty well. |

How 'bout some John Prine? His songs are easy to play and usually tell a story. Some of the subject matter may interfere with the overall morality of your school's director, however. Just a suggestion. |

Ask Harpeau. I believe he's a sort of music freak and plays guitar. |

I love singing & playing guitar with both kids and uni students!
For kids:
A Ram Sam Sam (A Rum Sum Sum??) by Raffi ~ they really really get off on the actions!
Do Rei Mi Sound of Music. The girls really love this one!
Eidelweise ~ a bit toughter but very melodic.
B-I-N-G-O
Old McDonald
Oh Suzannah
For older students:
Fire & Rain
Puff the Magic Dragon
Suzanne
Perfect Day Lou Reed
Have fun!

One of the most rewarding days i had in korea was teaching my kinders the words to Mr. Tamborine Man. I know a little too "Dangerous Minds," but it was entertaining none the less.
Here's another one....
Bob Dylan's God Gave Name's to all The Animals.
Very funny. |

I decided a long time ago that there was no way that I was taking my guitar into the classroom, I just cherish it too much. I could just see a kid hitting it for fun, knocking it over, bashing it with something, or yanking at the strings. |

I've actually used They Might Be Giants and stuff from Space Ghost Coast to Coast in class. Big TMBG class hits:
"Istanbul, not Constantinople"
"Mammal"
"The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas"
"Particle Man" (the kids have a dance routine for this)
And from Space Ghost, all kindies love Brak's "Don't Touch Me!" |
