I had one of those conversations with an ex-japanese esl teacher. He regaled me with stories of his times there- girlfriend after gorgeous girlfriend without hardly trying, saving buckets of cash, and still drinking every night...etc..
After my 3 brief stopovers in Japan and my pleasant impressions, I'd like to consider starting up there maybe next year..but, Am I too old?? I'm 30- and this guy reckons the Japs much prefer teachers between 20-27 yrs old...and that the market is pretty saturated there now...
How dissapointing!!!

No way you're too old, there's no age limit on having fun.
Yeah I'm over 30, but only just...and I think I skipped a few years in my 20's

With regard being employable as a 30 year old, the JET programme is increasing its maximum age, Number of applications have been dropping, but I think they're trying to expand the programe,
I'm sure for many schools, being 30 would be an advantage

Somebody else using the derogatory word 'Japs'. I don't like PC, but that is not a kosher term.

Anyway, no, you're not too old. Far from it.

Agreed Matko... That's why Japan is always abbreviated JPN

I was taking a Japanese lit class with a friend who had never studied anything Asian before... one day I was scanning his notes and he had written "Jap" about a hundred times. Didn't even realize it, but it is a derogatory term. This is one time when for sure it doesn't hurt to take the extra few key strokes and write out Japanese.

Apologies for writing "japs" ...okay, japanese..;
I had an interview with "Nova" before coming to Korea- at 28 I was the oldest applicant (although the most qualified)- refused..
Apparently that organisation prefers 22 yr old English Uni grads. Maybe they didn't like my "give me a job, I can teacher better than these juveniles, plus I have a CELTA and experience" attitude.
Plenty of people avoid the big chains and just get set up there themselves, right?
Talking of the women, I nearly had 3 girlfriends within a couple of hours on my last visa run to Osaka- those women are something else...On average they're maybe 1% less good looking than The koreans- but their happy, smiling, bubbly countenance more than made up for it..

Some of the big chains prefer the fresh faces. They're easier to control and attract a lot of female students.

Why don't you consider teaching in public schools? Since English has been introduced in elementary school here, there has been a lot of work in that field. Decent pay and GREAT vacation time.

Oh yeah. This guy said one of his classes was 90% young women. When asked their reason for studying English, most said that they wanted a western boyfriend..
Why can't Korea be like that???!!!!

at an average they are a little less good looking but they would imo be the sexiest gals in the world.. put another way, 100 jpn's and 100 koreans together and maybe 30 jpn's are sexy as opposed to 50 koreans... but the sexiest of the lot would be a jpn hands down... it is all in the eyes for me, they seem to shine.

if i were single, that is the place to be.

That they do, as opposed to their teeth, oh my God, I saw some horrific teeth in Japan, Not everyone of course, but when someone in Japan has bad teeth, they really really have BAD Teeth.
I swear some of my highschool students actually had teeth that were rotting

I'll third this opinion.

In any case, I'll reaffirm my previous post about how the best looking girls so far on my travels in Korea/Japan have been Japanese.. :)

japanese women may have bad teeth, but koreans apparently have tails. I'm heading for japan when this contracts over.

I'll concur about the bad teeth.

But crooked teeth make for better bj's.

Tails are also good if you're Bi.
