hey everyone

i'm going to ko samet for my one week holiday...

what's the best place to stay? hotel recommendations, places to stay away from, infrastructure?

i prefer places where i can do the following

1. escape dimbulb disaffected western youth who dance to electronic music and think it's good music but don't know that they're just stoned and stupid
2. rent motorbikes
3. sit on a beach
4. eat amazing thai food
5. go out and get plowed if need be
6. go snorkelling
7. discreetly buy local herbal refreshments
8. make fun of 'firedancers'

anyone with any experiences, info, hook me up!

One week on Ko Samet? Seems like a long time for a small island, but maybe? Watch out for ripoffs... same as anywhere. It was nice enough. I like that green water on the boat ride just as much as the beach.

yeah, already been to ko chang...

i just want to lay on a beach and recuperate. i want minimum travel, maximum relaxation.

if ko samet sucks, i'll go on to trat to hit KC for a day or two. the lonely beach paradise bungalows is one of the best places i've ever been.

osangirl....

Phuket is hugely developed. Its been a tourist mecca for decades, and as a result, quite pricey.
If you do want a deal....there will be agents at your point of arrival to set you up with a myriad of choices. All of the hotels and bungalos have tour agents as well.
In my experience, Phuket isn't worth it. Its very crowded and commercial.

Try Krabbi. Its still pricey, but more justifiably so.

uberscheisse...

Ko Samet doesn't have the nice white sand of the southern islands. the beaches are quite rocky. but if you are just looking for relaxation, it will do you well!

Watch out for old, pot-bellied, bald German men wearing speedo swimtrunks with their Thai "Rent-a-girlfriends" riding around on scooters..

Sex tourists are scum.

Have a good time on your trip!

P.S. I am not implying that you are a sex tourist.

Hate to break this to you, but on Thai holidays, Koh Chang is overrun also. Prices will be up.

Have you considered Koh Phan Ngan ? Not the full moon party side, there are some awesome places uon the northern part of the island, shouldn't be too crowded.

Koh Tao is in the area also. This island is pretty secluded and has great beaches...

I just came back from Ko Samed last week. Pretty good if you just want to lay around and not do anything. Not a lot to do. Everyone speaks English there, so you won't have to speak like an English teacher for the whole time.

I stayed at the Sai Kaew Beach Villas which was excellent but it was the most expensive place on the beach. You will want to go to the east side. Its a very small island so its only a short trip to anywhere.

Just not a lot to do, but if thats what you want......Thats what I wanted and it worked perfectly.

As for rip-offs, there didn't seem to be a lot of bartering. Mostly set prices.
