Unless you have small feet, you probably want to make sure you have enough shoes to start off with. I know some people, especially women, who had problems finding good fitting shoes.

Just for the detergent problem: You can make your own fragrance-free laundry detergent out of mixing baking soda and borax. It's non-abrasive, environmentally friendly and if your washing machine can't rinse it thoroughly your shower should be able to just fine.
