Hey all,

I am headed to Shanghai on my first solo travelling mission. Not nervous but rather just want to try to be efficient, wandering around lost for the most of my trip doesnt really appeal to me.

Im going for 3 nights 4 days, all I could afford to take off.....

I want some sights, some lights, mad shopping, reasonable hotel, and some nightlife.....guess ill be minus a wingman......

Any suggestions at all.... would be greatly appreciated....

Cheers,

There is this really great shopping street called the Nanjing Shopping Road (or Street, I don't remember).

Shanghai is separated into two - Old Shanghai and New Shanghai or Putong. New Shanghai is REALLY modern. Very metropolitan, almost like New York.

Old Shanghai is full of character. You should go to the old Peace Hotel, it's next to the river that separates the city. The hotel has a groovy jazz band. I don't know if they have the same members, still, but when we went a couple of years ago, they were all Chinese, and old (in their 60s and 70s Razz) and they came out all these classic tunes.. really great. And the drinks were moderately priced. Although if I recall correctly, we had to pay an entrace fee but it included a drink.

Mmmm if you have time, may be you can book a trip to Suzhou.. take a look: http://www.suzhou.gov.cn/English/index.shtml. It is a very beautiful place.

That's all I can think of for now.... if I remember more I will tell you.

Get a guidebook before you go! We spent the first day or so wandering around like muppets.

That was all first-hand impressions at the time (Sept 2001).

http://www.asiahotels.com/

Go there to take a look. We've booked through them many times. In my opinion, they give the best rate.

Its worth deciding where to stay in Shanghai before arriving. It is expensive for accomodation. I ended up staying in a hostel in the Bund which cost more than a love motel in Seoul.

The old town part of Shanghai is not very authentic. I thought that Suzhou (about an hour outside Shanghai) was more interesting for traditional stuff.

Take a trip on the Maglev train to or from the Pudong airport. even better than the KTX. shame the trip is so short.
