I'm wondering if I could save more money in Korea than New York City. If I worked as an ESL teacher in the public school system in New York I would earn about $3100 a month. According to this net pay calculator
after federal, state, and city taxes I would have about $2200 left.

An apartment would cost me atleast $800 a month and then I would need to spend atleast another $500 to pay for food, transportation, utilities, entertainment etc. How much do they take out for taxes in Korea?

Dude ... New York will eat you alive. You need 2 months deposit on an apartment ... if you can find a decent one and you are looking at 1200 a month rent unless you commute. And when your lease ends on an apartment you typically do not get your deposit back. They make up lies etc... and drag it out so you have to go to court ... of course you dont want to go to court so you say "F" this and live with it as a lesson learned the hard way. Do not go to NYC! You will be skinned alive!

To commute the cost is 3-4 hundred and 1 to 3 hours a day.

Tax in Korea is about 35 dollars on $1700 salary.

On that salary its no contest dude.
You can save much more in Korea than in in NY.
If you plan well you can even save enough in a few years to set yourself up nicely for when you choose to return to the States...
Its worth thinking about it.
