Fascinating! I've been here 6 years and I had no idea there were venomous (sp?) snakes in Korea. Thanks for the info, folks!

Does anybody have any additional info on venomous insects, plants, or other flora/fauna in Korea to watch out for? Especially for those of us who like to get out in the country on the weekends.

Theres one thing I heard about that can be pretty toxic, its a common garden variety, its found in many places around populated areas.

The scientific name for it is alcoholocus alotomus but the layman term for it is Soju, one can find it usually benealth a table of drunken foreigners, the symptons of "Soju" poisening is violent erattic behavior followed by intense vocalization of negative comments towards the host nation.
While not considered to be strictly venomous to foreigners it does have an effect on the native inhabitors of Korea, usually because of built up tolerance to the toxin the most visible symptons in these cases is vomitting, it is also a walking hazard.

If you happen to see this toxin, and be warned you are most likely to be very careful and please eat some of the antidote, Kimchi

Good luck people

The Korean ground skink I've seen twice.
Once at Chirisan National Park on a high ridge trail. Early spring, but hot. The night before was icy. So this skink was among that undergrowth that looks like waist high 'bamboo', but isn't. Perfect for tigers to lurk in.

The other time I saw this skink was a month ago, on a mountaintop again, down on Goje island. Early spring, but hot. Dashed across the trail and quickly dived into some hiding place after I followed it.

Keep this going. I have seen the soft shell, but never the skink. What about that big green snake with the black and orange blotches near the head?
