Venomous snakes almost always have triangular heads. A good rule of thumb is: when in doubt stay back.

Or maybe take a picture of it. Then let it bite and see what happens. If nothing happens then we will have a photo of a non ven. snake. If the person bitten dies. then the photo will be there to show the snake that killed him.

I am not 100% sure, but I think this is what they did a long time ago in order to make the first official lists of ven and non ven snakes.

Thanks rapier, I'm enjoying your disquisition on reptilia.

A 70-mile swarm of pelagic sea snakes? Wow, that would be something to behold.

Excellent work, Rapier.

Those sea snakes really make my skin crawl. I remember scuba diving in Australia when the instructors told us about sea snakes. Apparently the species we were most likely to run (or is it swim?) into were very gregarious and would possibly swim face-to-face and take a good enquiring look at our masks. Their advice was to keep absolutely dead still until such time as the snake lost interest and swam away, which might be several minutes.

All I can say is that I hope the snakes find the odour of copious amounts of to have a sedative effect. That would be the longest damn minute of my life and about as easy as playing dead when faced by a grizzly bear.
