Being a white male, I have a tendancy to imagine people here as being white male as well until I find out otherwise, but it's definately not true. The seven recognized countries for E2 visas in Korea come from N. America, Oceania, Africa, and Europe. Ireland, Scotland, Wales, S. Africa, Canada, and New Zealand each have other recognized languages besides English and they are all considered to be multicultural as well. It's quite comical to see people from these countries in Korea (ie, not in their own country and definately standing out) talking about this, while still promoting English as the international language that you can use just about anywhere.

Plus, Dave's ESL isn't just limited to the Korean board either, and since other countries allow people of other nationalities to teach English, that means we have people from just about every country in the world registered here, or at least lurking.

That's why this thread is hilarious. Expats in Korea talking about how they dislike diversity.

Ireland, Scotland and Wales are 95-99% white, northern European. They are hardly 'multicultural.'

Moreover, those diverse countries all have a common cultural link. Namely, they were all once part of the British Empire and have been heavily influenced by Anglo-Saxon culture.

bigverne, you are a one-note poster. Would you to have your way, this man would have never been discovered.

And you're wrong about them not being multi-cultural. Native indian populations + Europeans = multi-cultural. And then a bunch of other people on top of that. Or do the natives not count if their population is too low after being wiped out by disease and their languages nearly destroyed through the residential schooling program?

Please don't presume you know what 'my way' means. Excuse my ignorance, but who is that bloke?

Pay attention. I specifically was referring to your claim that Ireland, Scotland and Wales are 'multicultural', which is ludicrous.

Diversity is fine, up to a point. But simply parroting that we should 'celebrate diversity' and ignore some of the problems that occur when people of different cultures live together is of little use.

Well, I've never liked the 'let's celebrate diversity' schpiel much myself, to be honest. Were a place truly diverse it would be something a lot more natural, IMO. People would live together without much thought as to who came from where, and it would only be when others from outside pointed out how their society was made up that they would give it any thought. I'm not a big fan of government-sponsored 'let's be culturally diverse' days either.
That guy in the picture is that mathmetician from India who was brought over to England in the early 1900s after being discovered. I find that hard-and-fast laws regarding country of origin and recognized educationg do a lot to discourage people from finding gems in the rough like him, as he was completely self-taught. Right-click on the file to get his name and then check on Wikipedia if you like, as it's quite an interesting story.

One more thing: I apologize if I'm grumpy today. I got to bed at 6am last night and aren't feeling quite myself. Confused

Naw. Diversity is a good idea.

It just doesn't seem to work as well it should.

That depends on what you mean by diversity. Did God make the diversity of ethnic groups and languages? Yes. The diversity of religions? No.

If people were okay with diversity they wouldn't need to bring it up so much. It's like saying that your best friend is black. Why would you need to bring that up every five seconds?

I don't get it. I have no babies owing to the fact that I loathe the vermin.

Guys, they pushed "diversity" at my University like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

A lot of the international students were my friends, and it became apparent why the administration was so behind the idea.

They charged foreign students 2x as much to attend our school.

Diversity can be a windfall for the school, if the students come from abroad.
