Last week I was sleeping quite nicely, I mean having a really good sleep. It was like 10AM... and the bell goes off in my apartment. I wake up, and in my dazed state start trying to figure out who the hell is distrubing me out of the perfect sleep. I pick up my little apartment phone and there is a Korean man on the other end yelling at me. He keeps talking, calms down a bit, and says "Electric man..."

So I buzz him up to see what the hell is going on. He comes to my door... ends up he is the meter reader for the electric company. He holds up this little machine... says in broken english "Last month, 160, this month, 320... you use to much electricity!"

I say to him... "I paid the bill... whats the problem?"

His response was the same. Then he left. So I was thinking to myself... hmmm... have I been running my aircon to much lately? Get my bill today... only 34 thousand won...

What an ass! Evil or Very Mad

Please post your crazy ajoshi story if you have one.

can I hear more about the little machine that can speak english please!

Maybe he was just warning you that you're going to get a big bill, as a courtesy thing?

I'm afraid to get my electricity bill!!! I guess that the air conditioner eats electricity!! Before I always had a fan which wasn't very good but I splashed out this year and it's a hundred times better than a fan!!

By the way Metsuke, where abouts do you live? That guy has very good English for a "electric man".

I thought we weren't allowed such dirty talk on here. 50's not that bad tho for a "head on" (if that's what we're calling it these days).

The other poster suggested that maybe he was just trying to give you a heads up that your power bill is going to be high. Is it possible he was just trying to blurt something out in a kind of apprehensive hyper way? I know sometimes Koreans seem rather direct and at first I think they're being hostile but it turns out they're just trying to be friendly and helpful.

But if you think he was being hostile, I'll take your word for it. He probably has some kind of bug up his ass about foreigners and this was just something he figured he could hang you for. "Damn foreigners destroying beautiful Korea by using too much electricity..." he thinks to himself as he throws his trash onto the ground...

Did you check the billing period for the bill? If I remember correctly (and I believe I do) they're usually billing you for 2-3 months ago, just like most North American utility companies. You could be in for quite a shock in a couple of months.

Stupid question: How do you guys manage to use so much electricity? The highest electricity bill I have ever had was 12000, that was two summers ago. I usually have the aircon on most of the time I am home from now until the end of summer. My friends have really expensive bills too. I've just never figured out how. Of course I'm not complaining...Usually it is between 4000 and 6000won. Damn sight better than the usual 150,000 back home ^^

I remember they used to come to my placeeach month and do that. Then the apt. manager showed me that I could write in the meter amount the day before the meter man came to my place. After that, no more hassles.
