Thinking of detouring to Vegas when I go onmy next holiday. I hav never been there and only plan on sticking the occasional nickel or quarter in the slots.

If you have been there I would appreciate any tips.

Thank you

That's funny, we'll be passing through there this August. I went maaaaaany years ago and we passed through then too. From the look of it, it was a hole during the day and all glitzy at night. That was it in toto. Worth a look around just for the crazy atmosphere along the Strip but when the sun comes up, head out of town... the desert is beautiful...

my two cents...

Went to undergrad school there.

If you want to get away from the Strip, there are two places I recommend: Red Rock Canyon; and the restaurant/lodge at Mount Charleston. Favorite restaurants and bars: Rio's All American Bar & Grille (if it's still there); Rio's vodoo lounge; the Tillerman (on Flamingo near Eastern, I believe); and any Macayos (if you like Mexican food). Coolest casinos would be the Rio, Belagio, and Ceaser's -- always have loved Cleopatra's Barge, and now there's a pretty sexy "shadow dancing" show near that bar, too. (Check out Steve Wynn's new casino, it's where the D.I. used to be. I've not seen it yet because it just opened.)

Lake Mead sucks, very dirty. Don't forget Chris Rock's wise words, concerning the off-Strip entertainment: There is no sex in the champaign room.

I'm in Las Vegas now, my girlfriend lives and works here. I spend about a month here once every six months.

So your question is you just want to spend nickels and quarters in the slots? Good luck.. they exist.. but have to look for them.

Seems like things have really gone up all the way around $-wise here the last few years. 10 years ago this place use to have real cheap buffets and nickel slots and all the rest. Now its super-expensive just to buy a bottle of water, and most popular casinos on the strips are super-expensive for a minimum bet.

If you want to find cheap slots.. you might want to check out the sidestreets from the Strip or the downtown..

This city is getting REALLY international these days. My girlfriend works in a casino, now days most workers are Mexican.. and the dealers and such are generally almost always asian. Most of the people at the tables are more and more asian too.. its weird. Use to be a predomimately white city.. but its turning really mexican and asian really quickly - actually its kind of cool, but interesting the transformation of this city over the last 5 years even.

WHenever I read stuff on Vegas.. its always dated information, as this place is changing so fast.

For the most part, its a gambling city.. with mostly casinos and many huge huge names (if you want to watch any kind of show). An enormous amount of money is here as well.

Two days ago, I saw a young couple win something just short of a million dollars. Absolutely shocking to actually see that. I don't gamble much at all.. but it encouraged me to drop a dollar immediately afterwards - I lost it, and continued on in my non-gambling ways.

Its a fun city to just walk around.. and a great city to party (24 hours - and massive amounts of people running around all days at all hours having fun).

Make sure you go to Olympic Gardens. Without a doubt, the best gentleman's club in the city. Make sure you hit an ATM before going in there, though. Wink
