NO is toast. NO was built to facilitiate river trade and then made money off of oil for awhile but now that activity is gone. The insureres will drag their feet, the gov't will drag its feet while trying to infer NO isn't worth rebuilding. Why rebuild? People live there etc and its their homes but that existance has been as of late marginal. Investment isn't coming, govt investment is usually fruitless.
Sorry to be harsh but I'm from the rustbelt and I've seen extinguished economies and I've seen when people can't realize that. |
Yes, but people from New Orleans have an incredible love for their city, more than Atlantans, Philadelphians, Los Angelenos, etc. Everyone who has known New Orleans is weeping for it now, and they *will* go back and rebuild. |
That's funny to me, because I work with a couple of NO natives, and neither of them is real positive about the whole affair. Let me quote one of them: "I'm not suprised [by the violence] people in NO are the scum of the earth. People from ghettos around the country go there and are like,'uh-uh, no way. I'm going back home."
Now that's probably a bad example, but I did think it was funny.
I think doofu and desi are right, NO is a big part of american history, and has (based on my very limited knowledge) a pretty strong and vibrant culture, unique to the area. I suspect that logical or not, cost effective or not, these folks are going to show us all about determination and steadfastness and rebuild their city. I mean heck, look at how many people stayed even in the face of near certain disaster. And you can't tell me those are all people who couldn't get out. I'm seeing plenty of cars in that city. |

That is a funny f-ing video...(in the context of a tragedy, I know, but it's still a funny video, the correspondent himself laughs at it) |

Those cops were so caught!!! They really weren't expecting a TV crew to show up.
Reporter: What are you doing here?
Cop: Looking for looters (as she walks away from her cart full of shoes and stuff).
Reporter: But they're all around!!!

I can hear all the conversations in NO right now...
John: "Hey, what's up?"
Sue: "Nothing. My house is gone, my kids have no food, I ain't got no car..."
John: "Same here. I lost everything."
Sue: "But check out these new pumps! Ain't they hot! And I got me a new TV, too. Check it out!"
John: "Yeah well check this! I got 400 bath towels from the Bed, Bath, and Beyond! Maybe I can use them to soak up all this water! And, I got some fly personal hygeine equipment here, too!"
Looting is ridiculous... Unless you're taking food, water, or baby supplies, you should be shot in the streets... |

Apparently, the LA governor feels the same way,
Quote: |
"They have M-16s and they're locked and loaded," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said of 300 National Guard troops who landed in New Orleans fresh from duty in Iraq. "These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will." |
Tough times demand tough talk, and tough action.

I agree you Pligganease.
Shoot those marauding bands of scumbags.
The stories coming out of the disaster area are horrible. I feel bad for the innocent people who are being preyed upon by the self-centered scum.
Stealing generators from hospitals.
Shooting at helicopters.
Tourists and residents being beaten and killed.
Nice people America has created. Those dirtbags are everywhere in America.
That's my rant. |

Well the good news is that if the cops are looting wal-mart they must not have anything more pressing to attend to. Which must mean everyone's been evacuated or at least recieved supplies, the sick and injured have full access to medical care, the bodies have been picked up, and all the stranded and trapped folks have been rescued.
Right?
RIGHT?????
I sicerely hope thos police women are stripped of all rank and thrown in jail for the maximum allowable time, both for theft and for extreme negligence of duty.
People are dying and the cops clearly give a shit less.
The army can't get there fast enough. |

Fats Domino found OK in New Orleans
Thursday, September 1, 2005; Posted: 11:44 p.m. EDT (03:44 GMT)
(CNN) -- Rock 'n' roll pioneer Fats Domino was among the thousands of New Orleans residents plucked from rising floodwaters, his daughter said Thursday.
Karen Domino White, who lives in New Jersey, identified her father in a picture taken Monday night by a New Orleans Times-Picayune photographer.
The photograph shows Domino -- the singer behind the 1950s hits "Ain't That a Shame" and "Blueberry Hill" -- being helped off a boat near his home in the city's Lower 9th Ward.
His whereabouts since the rescue were not immediately known. Nor was there any information about his wife, Rosemary, friends said.

I see no problem with the looting. The stuff is already damaged and insured.
i'd be all over those stores. You all know you would to. Only i wouldn't be excusing myself with lame excuses "Oh we can't wash clothes, we have to have clean clothes.." i'd just enjoy it as the god- given free gift it was.
Come on dude, those people have lost everything. How can you deny them a new HiFi for pity's sakes. |
