I think I'd like to end up in Seoul, everyone seems to be pretty happy there. What's the best area of Seoul to live in? I'd like to be close to some night life but not out in the slums Confused

Anyone have any suggestions?

As a side note, has anyone heard of Ilksan? And what were your opinions?

Ganagnam-gu. Kaepo-dong, Ilwon-dong, Daechi4dong. {this is assuming you can't afford a fancy villa in the UN village}

My one piece of concrete advice: stay clear of incheon...

After that
Depends what your after being close to the nightlife/shopping/not so many people (relatively).

Just make sure it's close to a subway station as well.

interesting as everyone is giving completely different answers! Smile

i like shinchon/hongdae/ehwa.. but it was because i was living/teaching there.. but now i'm in a new area (secret).. its not as good.. but i really don't mind being here at all either.. funny how everything has its things.. i like the different perspective on Seoul actually.. and being where i am means i'm about equal distance from kangnam, itaewon, jongno, shinchon.. which means i seem to get to know alot more places.. and i'm even getting to know everything around me as well.. kind of interesting.. and not too bad either.. i loved shinchon/ehwa/hongdae.. but when i lived there i almost never ever ever went anywhere else.. now i go everywhere.. (still having said that, i definetely wouldn't recommend where i live now (secret) as being the best place in seoul.. but its alright though..

I live in Sadang-dong and can't really recommend it above or below others. Most places really seem about the same.

If I had my choice of spots (outside of the big business foreigner communities), I'd get a small and funky joint up in Samcheon-dong, just past Kyungbuk Palace and the Book Cafe. Seems like a cool relaxing place.

Been living in Ewha Shinchon area for 6 years and quite happy.

Will move this august, not sure where though. I need somewhere more residential for the baby.

I live in Jamsil, and I dig it...pretty far from Hongdae/Shinchon though, so I don't get there very often, I'm sure I'd really like it there if I went more often. Close enough to everywhere else to go decently often, though I stay around here most of the time.

Gangnam's not too bad, but you'll need a map to find home after a night out.

I was going to suggest Yangcheon-gu (mok-dong and Yancheon-gu office areas) but you said near night-life, so that eliminates that area. I'd agree with everyone else: Sincheon/Hongdae or Gangnam.

Your dogs are safe in Chamshil near Olympic Park. There are no dog soup catchers around there.
