To my fellow CDN I also would like to know your experience. It sounds like the won has plummeted. You'd be under the same tax rules as me, Canuck, so would you do it again considering the lower value of the won?
I've got a contract for 2.5million but if I'm only saving 14000$ CDN a year I don't see why I don't just stay in Canada... |

Sorry America but get your facts straight.
There are salary calculator's online and even if your math teacher friend is living in Quebec (highest taxes) the taxes would be 45%. please don't be hyperbolic.
Up in canada we wish the americans would learn a few things about the country that sends oil to y'all for free (practically) |

Saving $14000 in Canada is damn hard, and that's with a 70k salary.
If you're making 2.5 million a month, you should be able to save between 1-1.4ish million won without too much effort. However that depends on your spending habits. Getting by with about 1 million (+/- a few 100,000) a month is pretty comfortable. |

what about the fact that the won has plummeted in the last 5 years against the $ and for 2million won, the exchange is almost $900 less value than it was in 2003 |

Rent and gas are the biggest expenses. Good luck trying to find a nice place in Calgary for under $1000/month. Also, from what I hear gas is now over $1 a liter, so to fill up that tiny Corolla is gonna' cost you $50+. |

1) shared accommodation in Alberta has plummeted. the oil is bust.
2) I DON'T WANT A CAR AND THEREFORE DO NO NEED GAS
3) I would be really appreciative if you could comment on the won's bad economic performance against the CDN dollar. you've been teaching for awhile over there right? |

$1 CDN = 1100 won
With 2.5 million/month, you'll save half easily, do the math. |

Comment on the won. If you've been there a while that would be helpful. I've done the math. 14000 doesn't seem like much.
I was able to save 10-12000 while in school working 15 hours a week. |

Commenting on the won is not going to help you. It goes up, or down, your guess is as good as mine. Most likely the won will stay at these levels or get worse since a weaker won is better for exports.
Send your money home in $5000-$9000 chunks every 6 months or so. Around 14 million won is probably what you'll save. With privates maybe add a couple more million won/year of savings. You're not going get filthy rich in Korea, but you have a good chance at saving 14 million won. |

On the date this was posted 2 000 000 won would get you 2,576.00 CAD, however today it is worth 1,728.00 CAD. Which is a pretty big difference if your trying to pay off loans back home. |
