Ok, I know a little. Mostly I just ignore it all on the airplanes because I really don't need a $75 bottle of wine or some perfume..

My question is this...

I went to Lotte Department store at Jamsil the other day. Near the top, they have a "duty free" shop. Prices were in American dollars, and some of the things were SOMETIMES substantially cheaper (video cameras and digital cameras, for example -- although selection wasn't huge).

Can I, as a foreigner, in Korea, qualify to buy such items? Do I have to be a visitor on vacation, or have some special status?

Thanks

Am wondering if they check a passport or something.

I don't think that matters, but even if it did, don't you have any american friends that can help you out?

It's also good to make friends with some US troops in Korea. My military ID expired back in '98, but with the help of some friends I can still shop at the PX and comissary, and fulfill my need for cheese, spices, and western vittles, usually for cheaper than I'd get it in the states.

You can buy stuff there, but you have to show them your ticket out of the country. You will then be able to pick it up at the airport duty free when you leave.

That answers my question, Kim.

No return ticket yet.

What's going to happen if I buy something at the duty free shop, pick it up at the airport, and then bring it back to Korea with me on my return? The thing I'm looking for is a relatively big ticket item-- not something generally associated with being an English Teacher.

Would I get dinged by customs coming back in? Have to pay an import tax?
