I am will be leaving for Seoul next week and am curious if I should purchase a laptop here in the U.S before leaving. I have seen some fairly good deals here in the last few weeks. I don't know what the market or quality is there, especially if there are technical support issues.

If you want a new MacBook these are not available in Korea yet and there are very few Apple offerings in the entire contry. Even when Macs are available here you can usually only upgrade the RAM n South Korea, not hard drives.

No, just keep your lap open and find someone to sit on it............

Buying stateside will only have you hooked and unavailable.....sitting at the computer while all the other laptopless guys are looking for a Korean lap top. ..............

If you buy a laptop before coming here, you'll only be disappointed. Wait until you see what happens............

Unless it is price that matters. American laptop models can be quite cheap compared to Asian lap top models...........difference in feminine mindsets.

I personally had a few issues with that thread, but let's keep our focus here. In terms of the warranty, remember that if something real bad happens with it, you're probably going to have to send it back home. Not everyone is going to cover that shipping cost, which can get quite pricy. Now, obviously you can take it somewhere here to get it fixed, which if you do means that you shouldn't be counting the warranty from home as a big selling point.

Secondly, I'm wondering how much you really think you need a laptop versus a desktop here. I bought a laptop before coming here, and found it useful for bringing in to class for music and videos on occasion, but otherwise I use my desktop for stuff. If you're looking to bring your machine in to work to get stuff done or to otherwise use in the classroom fairly regularly, I'd say get the laptop. Otherwise you'll be pretty well set if you come here and get a desktop--it'll cost less and have more power for games and whatnot.

In terms of internet access when you first get here, there are PC Rooms all over town for about $1 an hour that will give you very capable and high speed access to the internet and messenger and everything else, and you can get a machine here almost immediately.
