Do you agree that Korea is very conversative? Why? What do you think "conservative" means? I just read this opinion in the paper the other day, in article about sex-change operations., and thought I'd throw the question out there.

well, if determined by its porn, Korea is conservative.
If determined by the number of open homsexuals, it is conservative.

Yesterday, one of my 11 or 12 yr old. students knew the word "transgender." I had to ask him to repeat the word since I couldn't believe he knew such a word; hell, I don't think I knew what it meant when I was his age. Anyway, he made it clear that he had said "transgender." I asked him what it meant, and he explained it to me. He came across it in some english book of his. It gave me a nice laugh and was quite a surprise.

There's a Korean guy who became extremely popular a couple years back that everyone has seem to have heard of named Harisu. It's not really any different than RuPaul being popular for some reason in the western world, except that RuPaul scares small children while Harisu does modelling.

Remember kids, she's a he.

Yeah, I've had some presumably heterosexual male students openly admit that they think Harisu is a doll. You probably wouldn't get that in the supposedly more liberal west, even among people who style themselves as the vanguard of tolerance.
Then again, that Korean TV actor(can't recall his name) who "came out" last year found himself banned from the network, and is now picking up the pieces of his career. Apparently, his entire family told him they wanted to commit suicide because of the shame he brought upon them. So go figure. Perhaps, unlike in the west, transgendered persons in Korea are not widely viewed as being "gay", so Harisu has an easier time being accepted as a woman. Just a theory.
One thing I thought was interesting was that both Harisu and the "Korean Ellen" guy showed up at Mr Roh's inaguration, and spoke out in favour of the President as a beacon of tolerance. So, despite the perception(not entirely unwarranted) of Roh as some sort of hyperpatriotic demagogue, he does seem to have at least a smattering of support among those who would stand to gain the most from the modernization of Korean society.

Ok so if one assumes, as one would, that that above person is a woman, what's the big deal? If the change is total why is the knowledge she was a he a big deal to anybody? I assume the new person has all the female equipment. Well maybe not reproductive ability? OK then perhaps it is a bit creepy.

I think most people are conservative. We don't change much do we? Change your location, lifesytle, or body, and still you are basically what you were. Or do people change much? I'd say most of us live in fear of leaving behind the selves we are familiar with. We always carry that knowledge, those memories, that culture we have experienced.

That article in the paper referred to Korea as a "deeply conservative country." I think perhaps it might be, although it seems there are other countries perhaps more so. Maybe some of the Muslim cultures.

Korea is like a circus freak show compared the the Southern USA. In many areas in the South it is illegal to sell beer! I know of many highschools that did not have proms because dancing is considered a sin.

On the other hand Korea is the only place I know of where prostitutes put their business cards on your windshield. I remember a Korean times article that said upwards of 20% of the adult male population visits a prostitute at least once per week. Mabee they think it is conservative because they deny it and blame it on the US.

Like everything else here it's all about surface and perception. Much like the gawdy flashing lights and caked on makeup, conservativism is feigned. Get past all this & peer at the underbelly and you'll find it's quite filthy. Hell, I'd say that most major cities in North America are far more conservative than Seoul given the all night drinking rampages and the tens of thousands of prostitutes here.

I'd say Korea is more conservative than most if not all Western countries, but it's not an across the board thing.

If you're talking about prostitution or alcohol, then Korea ain't conservative at all.

At the same time, flashy styles of dress are uncommon/discouraged, people live with their parents for ridiculous lengths of time, relationships are often very slow to get physical, censorship is tight, and homophobia is the norm. Harisu may be accepted as a pop figure, but see what would happen if she wanted to marry someone's son.

Caution: somewhat graphic post. If easily offended by sexual material, STOP READING NOW.

Ok gentlemen, poll time (and if someone would kindly show me how to put up a poll as a reply to a post I'd be grateful).

Male posters - how far would your curiosity take you if you were to meet Harisu and she basically offered it all?

Scenarios with alc in system:

1. I'd have to have a few beers in me, and would probably let my hands do some wandering.

2. I'd have to have a LOT of beers in me, and would probably let my hands do some wandering.

3. I'd have to have a few beers in me, and would probably let my hands do some wandering and accept a Bravo Juneau.

4. # 3, except I'd need a LOT of beers.

5. # 3, + equivalent reciprocation on my part (note* Harisu is a full-op).

6. # 5, but only extremely trashed.

Sober scenarios:

Same scenarios as with booze, just sober.

These are just the most logical ones I could come up with right now, so feel free to add your own sick lttle perversions, you freaks. Laughing

Well? Let's seperate the men from the boys (no pun intended, lol).

Ok, you wussies, I'll go first. I see myself as a #4. Shocked

Well he had a full sex change, so she is now pretty hot. I would go with 5.

You'd have to nail down whether it is a he or a she. That'd be a tough call, alcohol or not.

I saw the pic before I read the words. WOW

Before I knew she was a dude I would be quite pleased with a:

quite pleased Smile

But, once I found she was a dude, the proper way to handle the sit would be to back out of it carefully, trying not to bruise any feelings. Tell him that things just wouldn't work out, you know cultural barriers and stuff. Try NOT to cause a scene. Maybe send some flowers over on your way out. Run like H E L L, Yeah, that's my advice.

Nice a s s though. !
