When I contacted Korean Air, they gave me tiny measurements for carry-on musical instruments. In the event I won't be able to bring my violin with me, what will it cost to get a decent instrument in Korea?

Has anyone ever bought a violin in Korea? With the many orchestras, it seems there would be a good market. Prices, anyone?

One go to the international door to the departure gates at an airport close to where you live and you will see many that carry on bigger things than a violin. Koreans are big offenders for this. What you are told and what happens are two different things.

Two. why are you flying Korean Air? Korean Air are about 50 more expensive these days than airlines like JAL.

When I go to japanair.com and try to book a flight, it produces an itinerary for me to fly to either to Chicago or NYC and take Korean Air from there. Don't know why. Perhaps it's because my departing city is San Antonio, though I do think Japan Air flies out of here.

To get the cheaper flights you normally can't get a direct flight. Apart from perhaps the coming summer holidays most flights are flying half empty so combined flights between airlines is becoming common.

Oh, I forgot to tell you to put your violin into storage when you get to the airport before you book in and then after you have your boarding pass etc you go and collect your violin and go to the departure lounge / gate. If you have the violin with you when you put your baggage through they might tell you that you can't take it on the aircraft. However once you are through immigration and into the the departure lounge you won't have a problem. As I said watch what others take through to the departure gates.

I have a chat friend who is the first chair violin (or is it assistant grand master????) of the Suwon Orchestra. She has studied/travelled all over the world.

If your question hasn't been answered, I bet she can answer it. She lives in Seoul and travels to Suwon every day.

PM me.
