I've met a couple guys recently who trusted me enough to show me their appointment books as well as tell me exactly how much they are bringing in per month. On an average month they make 7.0 all under the table. Every 3 months (one guy, every 6 months) they take a one week vacation to Thailand, Phillipines, Japan, party like a rock star, come back, and continue the cycle. This one guy saved money and has started exporting cars on the side when he hits Thailand back to his home country. These guys were throwing money around like someone just landed on their boardwalk with a hotel. If one thing goes wrong with my hagwon, I'm SO out, and I know how to get privates, and know about the legal issues of course...here's the thing...how do I find out if my Visa has been cancelled when I quit? And has anyone heard of making a deal with a company or school (I'm on excellent terms with the director) where you pay the tax for the rest of the year that he bares because of you plus some extra cash.

Why don't you just tell the director of your school the truth? "I appreciate your hiring me and sponsoring my visa, but I've discovered that I can make a lot more money teaching illegal privates on a tourist visa and partying like a rockstar during my visa runs than I can by working for you. Would you mind giving me a letter of release so that I may pursue this dream of mine?"

I am sure that you will find that your boss will be more than understanding. Especially if you also tell him that you know what's up when you ask to be released from your contract.

This will also make you officially the coolest waygook in Korea, since you will have gone from making 3.2 million won per month to 7 million won per month, all before even collecting a single paycheck!

Pootie,number one...privates are ILLEGAL.
And those "friends"who showed you their "appoinment books"...well,they might just be slinging a little(or a lot) of BS.So they have a lot of "names"written down in an "appointment book"...that does not necessarily mean they are teaching all of those people or making 7 mill.even though they are throwing money around as you say(that fact in itself sounds SUSPICIOUS,and well,,,,,STUPID)

They may be making pretty good money(illegally)...but I bet they are spreading the old BS on pretty thick too.I had a housemate one time who always bragged about his privates(lessons, that is)...but funny thing...he always seemed to be broke and trying to borrow money from other people. There are a lot of "teachers" here who like to sling the old BS.

I think you are still wearing those rose-colored glasses.

pootie I have been here 6 years dude!!

making 7 million is possible! BUT we are talking about a selected few, people that have landed primo jobs! also private teaching the jobs dont last! 3 months- 6 months you loose some.. do the math dude!!

if you made 7 million a month,, EVEN at 50 an hour which is almost impossible have every private at that price! most will be 35.000 even 30 or 40 some at 50...

7 million won @ 50.000 an hour = 110 hours a month

so your looking at 28 hours a week of teaching! not including all the travel time going to and from the jobs.., thats still 5 hours a day of teaching at 50.000 you will be looking at 10 hour days!

STILL! thats if you can get that work! they not so easy!!
and 50.000 an hour for 100 hours a month is dreaming!!!
like I said you will be earning mostly 35.000 or 30.000 if you do block hours!! so now add up the hours!!
12 hour days and a couple of hours on the weekends too..
POSSIBLE! dont get me wrong..

but you're new friends are bragging!! I have met plently of cats you love to talk crap in the pubs about how much they much! ITS BS MAN!!
they just want to show off but acually make half that!!
anyway pootie.. goodluck!!
its not as easy as you think!!!
for you a freshmen here, it will take you 6 months just to get all the privates which adds up to 7 million its not going to happen overnight dude
and if you use recruiters! then you are looking at spliting your wages!

Pootie- there are also stories of people buying a certain number of lotteries every year, going to the casino and hitting it big, and so on... There wouldn't be such a thing as lotteries or even one casino if the odds weren't stacked.

Let me do my math- I know that tutors make on average 300,000 a month for three 1 hr. lessons a week- 12 a month. OK-

120 lessons a month= 3,000,000 WON
240 lessons a month= 6,000,000 WON
276 lessons a month would equal around 7 million WON.

276 hours divided by 22 days (average work days in a month) 12.54 hours of teaching a day. Now if I add only 10 minutes of transportation time x 12.54 that's 125 minutes/2 hours. That puts the day at over 14 hours.
In Seoul with travel time being- well- huge that could put a person into a --- well --- close to a 20 hour day.

Also, even assuming these guys are cherry-picking around a single campus at a university/college- it doesn't take a genius to figure-out that the smaller the circumference of your tutoring- the BIGGER the chance of getting caught. And then we must play the role of an actuarian to calculate the mortality rates on such activity- I would assume that people die at an early age (Tutoring-wise) when their circle of activity gets too small.

I did this quickly- so correct my math if I'm wrong.

Maybe for 1 month they may have peaked at 7mil but at a constant, no way. Its all "Potential" earnings they quote you, like if they had all their PJ's at once for a month, no breaks etc.(also takes a super human teacher to keep up motivation, creativity, plans and all around 'Jamie- so'. Theres also problems getting that amount of cash out. Wink

Don't do privates myself, but back in the day (pre-IMF) the people I knew who were making the big bucks in privates weren't doing it on a simple hourly wage scale. They were getting parents to pay 15,000 or 20,000 won per kid per hour and getting about 6 six kids per class. That's how the money was made.

Sounds like a pot of trouble. Most of the persons I knew who were "walking the dog"- code for tutoring- built their port-folio through their school and relationships with parents, bla, bla, bla. So- their numbers grew. I thought Korea was all about relationships. I'd be surprised if your numbers grew apart from relationships. But- who knows- perhaps the parents of the 10 or whoever would become exponential.

Anyway- it is illegal- sounds like a pot of trouble. One poster earlier "went for the gold" and found himself with a rainbow instead.

Their privates are all in a certain area where people pay a premium. Please forget whether it's true or not...once my work visa is cancelled, do I immediately have to fly out, or am I granted 3 months to leave? Also, I'd never tell my director the truth, there's no sense in it, I'll tell him I was offered a corporate job. Also, I'm not even looking for privates at the moment since I'm still getting situated and want to get into a routine, and then figure out when I can fill some slots...but I already have 5 numbers of people who are interested...and further more, this one guy I know who is leaving has 10 privates that he would refer to me...act now?

Pootie: If you're American, forget about it. You can barely stay in the country *1* month without any sort of non-tourist visa, let alone 3 or 6.

This is the job that's paying you 3.2, and the director who flew you to Japan, right?
Your integrity is limitless.

Pootie your so full of ddong it's spilling out onto a web forum where no one really gives a crap.

Not only are the comments from the other posters true, but I find it hard to believe that the director would be so cool as sponsoring your visa. There is a little something that you didn't know that you forgot to cover in this little story of yours.

When a school applies at the immigration office to get sponsor a person, they have to submit the enrollment and other demographics of the school, including some finacial records. Basically, the school has to prove that they need to hire a person for their school. If they only have an enrollment of 200 students, the immigration office will get suspecious if the director is trying to hire an additional foreign teacher if they already have 2.

I suppose there is a way to cover this up, but it's alot of work for the director to cover all of his/her tracks. Anyway, very unlikely story.

ohh damn pootie you already have a visa?
then you're skrewed mate!!
immigration wont release you until you have completed 6 months at the school or is it 9 months now>?? they just changed the law, both parties are stuck with each other for a certain time now too many people running
now your director I doubt he will just give you a release letter what ever the reason! still maybe he does..
and yes you have to leave once you're done!
then you come back with a tourist visa! not difficult to get if you are american...
you will have to fly out every 3 months! thats if you bought the tourist multi entry visa in the states! did you buy that?
didnt think so!! so you are looking at going to the embassy to buy that its not much..
then you have to cover

your own housing! and key money! unless your sharing!
days that privates cancel, especially during the vactions and holidays
no paid vacations!
cover your own medical
transports
FOOD
every 3 months a trip to japan
you cant take too long a trip because you have work remember!!
and one week away would end up costing you more than you paid!
need to buy all your own books!

now this is all the first month before you even start!

Pootie you are funny dude. you been in korea 1 month, you met a guy in a club who told you about privates is the way to go, and now you want to quit your job and do that!!
you need to calm down dude!!
at least settle in a bit!
do your first year get a feel, do some privates in your free time RELAX

you sound like a guy who first day joins the teams wants to be quater back!
nothing wrong with being positve! but dude , you dont know all the facts man!!
you will have days where privates will cancel like the KOSPI drops!
you got rent due, phone bills, you need to buy a ticket to japan in peak season, been hitting the clubs hard spending cash, buying girls drinks,
that dream of 7 million still hasnt been reached!

BUT HEY!!! who am I to tell you anything..
GO FOR IT MAN!! you may go straight to the TOP!!!
you never know until you try!!
goodluck man
15 hour days take its toll

Oh BTW those 10 privates, thats not even half the quota you are talking!

pootie, your comments make me want to puke. you are the stupidest person i think that posts on this forum. the other week you were boasting how you landed this top job, 3.2 million a month etc etc. and now, all of a sudden, you are thinking of throwing all that away and going illegal?!?!? did you have your common sense removed at birth?

let me tell you a little something about a person i know very well. he is here in korea because he fell in love with a beautiful, lovely korean lady in auckland. he was travelling and working in new zealand, and you know, just fell in love and chased her here to korea. he knew the chances. he knows the risks. but, you know, love does that kind of crazy thing to you. unfortunately, due to stuff, he did not finish his degree course. right now he wishes so much he had because believe me, apparently, teaching illegally is sh*t. ok, you can make more money etc etc. but you never know if you are going to be let back into the country when you do your visa run. you never know when immigration might find you. you have to take one day after the other. you can't plan anything because you don't know whether this day is going to be your last in korea. to hear that someone is seriously considering giving up such a high paying job just because some jerk off showed them their diary is well and truly beyond me and no doubt beyond anybody else who posts on this forum with half a brain. that ridicoulous post you wrote the other day about how damn good looking you are just sums up what kind of mentality you have. as soon as you leave this forum and take your trolling somewhere else i believe all the other serious posters on dave's will be much, much happier.

no insult intended.

peace out.

I must agree with most of the posters on here Pootie.

You seem to be the poster boy for the me, myself and the idiot school of westerners living abroad.

a) You seem to not have very much integrity or respect for others

b) Two you change opinion more often than the wind changes direction in typhoon

c) You seem to have no dept perception. By this i mean you just landed this 3.2 job and now you hear a couple of dudes boasting about obviously inflated numbers and you want to jump ship and expect your director to go along with your little scheme like he owes you something. And you haven't even completed one month at your job.

Looks to me like you are a perfect example of whats wrong with the teaching market here.
Good luck in your schemes and I wonder...in your quest for more gold...did it ever enter your thoughs that what you are thinking of doing is illegal on many levels...?

Good post.Well,Homer, since Pootie has been TOLD by others that what he is contemplating is illegal,he should know....but he is dazzled by contemplating all that potential money...and he will probably tell you...NOBODY EVER gets caught! Laughing
You are right,Homer,he is the"poster boy" for what is wrong with the TESOL industry here. And he has the brass to post and discuss his illegal plans. So much for some of the "teachers" in this business.Get rich quick, scam artists.... Rolling Eyes
