I wasn't sure in which forum to post this (General or Off-Topic), because for parents here it is relevant...but ultimately I decided on OT, because it's mostly me bragging about what a genius my daughter is.
Quick recap for most: for the past 3 months my wife and daughter were living in Canada, at my folks' place. The reason: we wanted our daughter to experience western culture for a considerable period of time, and to bring her English-speaking ability up a notch.
Sure, her English was fine prior. For a kid her age (3 years), she was well-advanced by my estimation; but after 3 months in the land of beaver tails, she's obtained a level of English and -- most importantly, to me -- creativity that is truly amazing.
To any expatriate parents out there living in Korea, I'd strongly suggest that, if possible, you or your spouse take your child/children to your home country for at least a few months every year. Again, it's like The Lawnmower Man over here.
Some amusing conversations with the little girl, some of which were previously written to Herr Flotsam via PM:

The 18th L asked me what my hobbies are:

(OK, that last bit was made up. I think.)
Later, she opens one of those cutesy date/schedule books for kids, and there's a map of the Seoul subway:

Me: Where do we live?
GZA [pointing to the Bundang line]: we live here. Behind E-mart. But you have to take a taxi. Daddy, in Canada they don't have E-Mart, they have Sobeys.
Me: Which do you like better?
GZA: It doesn't matter to me. |
The 18th L, playing with her toys:

I cannot fault you at all, but here's the thing that I'd like to know: What's the Magic Door? Ask her about that, because I'd be keen to know her opinion about such a mysterious device. |

I would, however, like an explication of the various, slightly ghey, hip-hop-nommes you are burdening the poor sweet child with. |

(*Soldier was on TV this morning. It still sucks, but at least it sucks avec Kurt Russell. Which is sort of like having to go to the dentist's for a root canal, but having it performed with the aid of a comely assistant. Matter of fact, it is exactly like that.) |

The GZA - the genius - is just the genius! She's the backbone of the whole family. It's self-explanatory. She's the head, let's put it that way. Tiberious' family forms like Voltron and the GZA happens to be the head. |

And she truly is the cutest GZAR on the planet.

Cute indeed. Kids say some amazing things. I used to babysit my niece and nephew. Once I was walking up the road with my niece, age 5 or 6, on a fine summer's day. I forget exactly how our chat became philosophical, but she said something like
"Everything is the future."
Me: "What do you mean?"
"Well, the grass and trees and everything, when we come back later, they will still be here."
I couldn't argue with that logic.

I've only taught a little bit of kindergarten, and do not wish to again, but I heard some great stuff there, mainly in Korean. Once two boys were having a serious argument over whether or not a shark would win in a fight against a dinosaur. They were ready to fight about it! |
