Wow, with such awsome powers of observation why aren't you working for the KCIA?
I have no doubt there are spies and communists alive and well, I'd just like to hear how you- that paragon of white western intelligence- managed to smoke them out whilst all the country bumpkins stood around and applauded. Please tell us that story, we're dying to hear it. |

These guys are sill living out the Cold War. If you were a S Korean living in the west who wanted to defect, they would help you. They also keep tabs on agitators and sympathizers. |

I hate to sound ethnocentric, but what kind of a momo would want to defect to North Korea? |

Tancred you wouldn't believe the amount of idiots out there. The people who truly believe that comunist regimes are good governments. THe people who ignore the atrocioties that hte governments commit or that all the bad stories about them are western propoganda. I heard about one guy who believed in communism went to Cuba to study. He came back so dissillusioned because all of his beliefs about communism were shattered. Fortunately he went to a country that he could leave. The dumbdumbs who defect to N. korea don't get a chance to leave once they find out that it isn't good. Imagine the sinking feeling they get when they realize the truth.
By the way I know that none of the communist countries past and present practiced true communism. |

Threedognight might not be as far off as some of you suggest. While Threedognight might not of meant to sound paranoid what he said came off sounding a bit like he was paranoid. However using agents to spread propganda in target countries is not unheard of or necessarily uncommon. Nasser Gamel used this method to spread antiamericanism and garner support for pan-arabism in the middle east during the 1950s. It is not unreasonable to suggest that North Korea is doing this in South KOrea. I am sure that North korean agents have found a few sympathetic people to spread propoganda. They get a few people in important places, like a university, school, newspaper or other media, to spread pro north korean messages and anti-american propoganda. A lot of people will hear this, some will believe it. The people who believe it will tell other people, some who will believe it and some who won't.
While the number of N. korean agents is probably small, the number of people who have been swayed by their propoganda as quite considerable. Which, for a certain part, explains the hatred towards westerners, and a nearly constant blind eye turned towards N. Korea. |
I knew I was heading straight for "the anti-American" agenda on this board, which certain numbskulls like Beckerson like to sound witty about but fail at miserably. The gist of the matter is that "propaganda" IS A WAR, and there are telltale signs about this "ANTI-WESTERN AND ANTI-AMERICAN" sentiment in Korea. Just check the Daily Herald. FALSE, FALSE, FALSE!!!
Now as for one individual('Overleft'-nice picture, by the way,) asking me if I've ever checked to see if one intellectual's comments were accurate or credible I have this to say: have you ever to question whether it's better to know good before evil or evil before good? I don't have to know evil to know good, and in light of communism's track record, IT IS EVIL, and believe me, I KNOW OF THE STORIES, HAVE HEARD OF THE RELIGIOUS PERSECUTIONS, and worked for organizations to help suffering Chinese at the hands of communists.
Now democracy? We, as Americans, are a democracy based on Capitalism. This says that democracy is predicated on our belief in 'personal ownership of private property' etc. Is this bad? Are there other alternatives? Is freedom an inalienable right? Everyone knows this. But as democracy, in all it's mariad forms has proven; democracy is based on the fact that man is by nature supposed to be free, and that although American democracy is deemed decadent, demoralized, diseased, it is after all a democracy and best suitable to the self-preserving, selfish side of man that does indeed make for a better and freer society, as your big ass sitting at this computer being free to make such comments supposedly represents.

You know, 007 of the board, it's people like you on this forum that REALLY MAKE ME WANT TO MEET YOU FOR A BARBECUE AND. . .SHARE A FEW WORDS.
Believe it or not, ONE YOUNG STUDENT CAME UP AND PLAIN OLD TOLD ME HE WAS COMMUNIST!!? IS THIS ENOUGH FOR YOUR AWESOME POWERS OF CRITIQUING MY OBSERVATIONS?
MOREOVER, YOU CAN HAVE NUMEROUS OCCASIONS UPON LIVING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE TO MEET KOREANS and GET A DRIFT OF WHAT'S GOING ON, PARTICULARLY if some of your students start talking about the ills of capitalism, another about the North being brothers, and damn drunk farmers spouting off 'Migukin' as I walk into a tavern, which the former "POWERS OF OBSERVATION' are taken from. In other words, farmers are not all that happy about democracy(which America represents,) buddy, and if you think you know it all, take a trip and shake hands with some crusty old farmers and see if they like your 'BARBECUE-FOR-ALL-AT-THE-PARK' syndrome.

It may be something to laught about, or it may not. Look at some of the social situations you've had to confront, like times I've walked into public places and felt the hair stand out on my neck I could feel the hate so deep, particularly among farmers. |
Did they actually do anything to make you feel hated, or have you developed some sort of ESP?

Or how about some radical students, motivated perhaps by some unseen professor who behind the scenes is stirring up anti-Americanism with farflung ideologies and nationalistic fervor, much like that that took place this year? |
I actually walked through a few of these demonstrations. If you had, you would have discovered the same thing as me in that they are just protesting perceived inequalities in the Korean/American relationship. They don't "hate America". You can disagree with the actions of another without being reduced to disliking them as a whole.

Or how about the young children who chant slogans such as "F--k You USA," |
Different than American children swearing at France?

the shopkeepers who glare, the anti-foreign feelings that radiate out of no where? |
Evidence? Not to be an ass, but it sounds more like you're finding what you want to see even if it isn't there.

How about the lies about the Korean War? |
Would sure be nice if you told us what you're thinking.

South Korean sympathies toward the North? |
One can dislike the government while still wanting to embrace the people.
Quote: |
The political bashing of George Bush? |
This goes on everywhere.

Criticism of Capitalism? |
Why not? Just because something can be filed under capitalist doesn't make it right.

A young Korean woman who told me "You know, communism isn't as bad as Americans think it is." |
She's right, you know.

Or an intellectual who came to my class once and after the 911 incident chided in that "This just proves there's no such thing as a "pure" democracy?" |
There is no such thing as a pure democracy in practice today. Though the context of this statement would be nice. Plus what was his English level at? Completely fluent or just good?

Proof? |
You know, you type of people try to dissect something in order to try to imput silly opinions that you can't verify but with your own skewed reasoning, particularly of the subject at hand, which is not about America, but about democracy verses communism.
Nonetheless, read the revision. AND DO YOU REALLY WALK THROUGH DEMONSTRATIONS? Well, you must be one of those that reeks of Canadianism and that they can tell is just a bright-eyed patriot like themselves, right? Maybe when you find yourself mobbed and amidst violence you'll think differently.
Save the deconstructionist theories of literature for someone else. |

is it me, or did King of Kwangju's comment about NK spies in North America seem to make Trinny a bit jumpy?
What's she hiding? |

<Believe it or not, ONE YOUNG STUDENT CAME UP AND PLAIN OLD TOLD ME HE WAS COMMUNIST!!? >
...and? Did you want to report this student to police? Shouldn't people have the right to ideologically naive? There are plenty of Marxists on Unveristy campus's back in the West. Should they be blacklisted?
<damn drunk farmers spouting off 'Migukin' as I walk into a tavern, which the former "POWERS OF OBSERVATION' are taken from. In other words, farmers are not all that happy about democracy>
How do you know that? They might just be plain old racist. Plenty of them folks around.
<which America represents>
I think those from non-American countries in the West will take exception to that comment. |

IS that right, bozo? Tell me then what is THE GREAT INSIGHT OF FREEDOM YOUR COUNTRY(IES) HAVE TO OFFER THE WORLD IN TERMS OF DEMOCRACY? By RUNNING DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR? BY BEHEADING FELLOW FRENCHMAN?
As for the Korean student being communist, IT'S AGAINST KOREAN SECURITY LAWS TO MAKE A PUBLIC PROFESSION OF COMMUNISM, or to ADHERE TO COMMUNISM, my case being THIS WAS A COMMUNIST, wasn't it? Was he just saying so? Maybe. Nonetheless, it shows that communists and the belief, do exist in South Korea!!
As for the farmers? Well, racism is no problem, "if that's what they intended." But my judgment of the situation? It's just an example of the attitude of the people as a whole, get it? |
