Well, korean schools are really hitting rock bottom!! I mean who in their right mind would agree to "work" 8 hours a day for 1.6 a month! And they "offer" $1000.00 at the end of the contract! Korean law states that the severance pay equals a months pay! And this is a Christian school?!? I hope no signs this contract!
Given the exchange rate for the U.S. dollar, that's what... 1200 a month!!! You get more flipping burgers!

STIPEND: 1,600,000 Won a month. The exchange rate as of Aug. 2003: $1 = 1,200 won).
PAID VACATION: about three weeks in winter, three weeks in summer.
INCENTIVES:
1) Upon renewal of the second-year contract, a severance payment will be given(1,000$), and a free travel to Taiwan with our teachers' excursion trip in the end of second year of teaching.
2) Furnishing travel (two different times) around Korea (1 night and 2 days)
3) Korean lesson at Pusan Nat'l Univ.

Hagwons are really getting chinsy, yes.

The schools are starting to band together to push the wages down.

That's fine. Let them. Then there will be a teacher shortage and schools won't be able to offer native speakers.

Yes, as the wage drops and benefits evaporate into thin (or moderately polluted) air, China starts looking better and better. Shocked

No, not really. Just don't sign a low wage contract like that one.
cheers

No surprises there. Christian schools shouldn't be allowed. There are alot of filipino missionaries here that are not here to preach but to work as english teachers. They get paid 300,000-500,000 won. hypocrisy at it's finest.

Uh, that may be true in some cases Gomurr..... however -------
In Bundang Seoul in 2000-2001, there was a Christian hakwon
director who was also in a church in town. The senior minister
hired her teachers to teach the ministers (15 of them) and
college group on Sunday. The ministers all went to America
for a month or two, leaving the teachers with a regular hakwon
job plus showing up on Sunday evening. The salary: 3 million won --
or two times a university salary. Last I heard, this job was
no longer being offered. As for Isabelle, the man who hires
will tell you it's a twenty-hour a week job with 2 months vacation --
his wife, however, will insist that it's forty hours, and the English
Department of the High School doesn't like either one of them
and they don't want a foreign English teacher. Soooo ..
go talk to the contact person, who is a cute redhead American
who married a Korean minister, and you'll get yet another version
of what this job is. Laughing Shocked

it's sad to realize that some wide-eyed guy or gal from Kansas or Winnipeg with no understanding of the reasonable salary/benefits/conditions of teaching jobs in korea will enthusiastically take the job....

thus the vicious cycle continues...

Hmmm. I work at a university and get 2.5mil, and when I was looking for university work on Dave's most of them were offering 2.0mil.
Jeju was the lowest at 1.8mil.

As for low wages. If a school can get teachers to sign at such a low wage it will keep its wage low until all possible teachers refuse.

From what I've seen, Christian schools are the dredge of hagwon contracts. If you're lucky to get 1.8 from one, then your apartment is the size of a closet and that'll probably be shared, too.

I know a guy from my town in Calgary that took 1.7 at a christian school on his first contract. God only knows what their non-North American pay rate was.

Calgary doesn't even have the foresight to open 24-hour KFC's and McDonald's, unlike Winnipeg, so maybe that's why we walk into the cheap jobs sometimes. Smile

When the Boondong Church was paying 3 million, Woosong
University of Taejon was paying 1.4, not 1.8. And working on the island of
Jeju must be one step up from being incarcerated on Alcatraz ... there's
no way out without a plane or boat.

You're absolutely right though: while Woosung U paid its paltry 1.4
million back in 2000, with 50 foreign English teachers, Kongju Univ. north
of Taejon was paying 2.5 for working a class from 7-9 a.m. and then
teaching elementary from 4-6 p.m. and university from 6-8 p.m.
In other words, every day was a day off from 9 to 4, and there was
2 months or so of vacation thrown in. An Australian lady was
there for 5 years having the time of her life. Unfortunately I was confined
in a Christian hakwon in Taejon at the time, and could not get a
release (was that contract release or prison release? ... can't
remember right off hand).
