|
|
Just got my new computer (OS is XP) and I'm thinking of security due to the recent attacks.
Anyone recommend a virus scanner, firewall or something that is free to download and easy to use. |

2 things:
1. anti-virus software and firewalls are two different things, you should have both. Zone Alarm is a good free firewall if you're not satisfied with the XP firewall.
2. To be properly protected, at some point you're going to actually have to pay some money. Norton and McAfee or any other A/V s/w is only reliable protection as long as you keep them up to date, which usually requires a retail copy (or a subscription after a year or so).
EDIT: New pc with XP? make sure you go to Black Viper's website (just do a Google search) and get your XP services configured properly- this is another important step if you are concerned about security. |

Norton and McAffee are the industry standards for virus protection and you should be able to download a recent verison of either from Kazaa, Just remember to get the updates available online. |

spend the $70 and get the Norton Internet Security suite and spend the extra money for the virus update subscription. If you get hacked by one of these worms/viruses the damage that can be done to your computer will cost far more than what you will pay for the software. |

Try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Housecall is an online scanner, quite good and can auto clean for you. It doesn't protect you all the time of course but its a good backup until you get some software installed. |

I have 3 trojan viruses. I have absolutely no idea what that means but housecall says they won't delete them for me... |

I've been getting infected e-mails at my Yahoo address with the tags:
"Re: Approved"......"Re: That Movie"....."Re:My Details"..."Re: Details"
I am being very discriminating about opening e-mails these days. |

Sounds like it is time for a new mail address. Keep the current one for web site registrations etc and use a new one for friends and family.
Get Norton... |

Actually the yahoo e-mail address getting the infected e-mails is the secondary one used for everything else.
I know have to get a retail copy of Norton or MacAffee (to stay current with updates) but that means breaking my promise to NEVER buy anything over the internet....aaaargh!
I ran the 14-day trial anti-trojan program, it found 1 and blasted it into oblivion. Cool!
Housecall is neat too.... |

I have the same virus in my Yahoo! account as well. I'm getting a few dozen a day. Since each email comes with a 100k attachment, it's a major problem. My email account also seems to be sending these emails to people I know as well as total strangers.
It's called the Sobig virus, and it's going around right now. Here's a news article I found: http://tech.msn.com/ip/msnart1000.asp
Since my email account is trying to infect other people, getting a new email address doesn't seem like an adequate solution. I need to get rid of this thing.
I tried using Housecall, it found 5 "non-cleanable" viruses on my laptop.
Any advice? I'll compute more safely next time, I swear! |

The only anti-virus program that does it all is Norton. Get it! I have found that norton will even kill viruses tha mcafee doesn't catch.
If you have to get one off of kazaa... it works for a year until you have to renew your subscription. The solution to that is to just reinstall windows. |

"I forgot to buy Trojans" Tom laughed infectiously
Alright. I'll try the Kazaa Norton download. |
