The family registration system is not some Confucian tradition handed down over hundreds of years; it was introduced only in the last century, by the Japanese when they occupied Korea.
In that light, I find it interesting that many Koreans wish to keep it, while publicly demanding that other remnants of Japanese rule be obliterated.

A family registry that is held by the gov't makes it easier to control people. One family member commits a crime - the whole family can be easily identified and punished in or so subtle and not so subtle ways. Easy for the Japanese and easy for the dictatorship to keep people in line.
Funny how that got tangled up with confucianism and men as head of the household.
Oh my god anarchy will follow if there isn't a head of the household!! Men will not be respected if there names do not lord over all the family members. We need our family trees. |

Perhaps so, but the system probaby meshed with the indiginous Korean Confucianism quite nicely, and its supporters will likely now defend it as a Confucian institution, not a Japanese one. Maybe the reformers will play the anti-Japanese card?

I would have thought the fact that they don't have enough girls to produce sons would have been a bittle a shot in the arm on the whole thing.
