Because you are kiwiboy, I will give you the solution to this age old riddle.
Pohang, it's people (even a joke to other Koreans), it's waygook freaks, it's chicken man, crazy joe, and malboro staff, all add up to a life altering equation.
In adversity we Triumphed!!!!!!! Pohang is a celebration of the Human spirit.
Pohang is a teacher
It instills the ability to understand and recognize a very genuine kindness, seldom seen since my departure. It teaches us how to turn a very backward dull city which is seeing some pretty hard times, into a breeding ground for positive world change, or to transform it into something resembling New Orleans over Mardi Gras.....any night of the week. It teaches that friendships are forever. It teaches how to demand a decent long island iced tea. It teaches an amazing respect, and paradoxically, an amazing disdain for the korean way of life. It teaches us to look any hardship in the eye and beat it by singing, dancing, fighting, analyzing, walking, embracing, overcoming. It teaches us to admonish our ego and flow. It teaches us that solitude can be productive. It teaches us that Korea.....it's struggles and triumphs are fought in the provinces. It teaches us that any semblance of normality, democracy, equality, meritocracy, or sanity is in a galaxy far far away, and only a crude manisfestation of what it is said to be. It teaches that Metallica's 'Battery', Jonny Cash's ' Fulsom Prison Blues', anything by Al Green, Basement Jaxx's 'Do your Thing', anything from G'N'R Lies, Sam Cooke's 'Frankie and Johnny', Motorhead's 'Over Kill' and Chris Isaac's 'Wicked Game'........all seem to gel in the perfect way. It teaches us that the Chicken man is our mother (ok you got me, that was a bit weird). It teaches us that even Irish people can look quite fetching in a hanbok. It teaches us that Korea isn't 1 enormous trash heap, but can also be a place of profound beauty. It teaches us that even Kiwis can play soccer (sorry about the broken leg Jim, I bought you a long tea, we're square now.... right?). It teaches a resourcefulness, an attitude, a positivity that will never diminish. I would never go back, but often find myself in a "Pohang state of Mind"
would love to write more.......props to the remix.........I got some sugar goin down...........knew you'd understand.
Also, had many people approach me and thank me when I was there for the information they received from this thread. It's a shame y'all don't start posting.........think of the future generations will ya |

Very well said inexhile.
Word to the Chicken Man.
Our mother.
Master of all things chicken.
Lets hope that one day, and one day soon, Pohang will again be dominated by ferocious Pohangsters who prefer straight liquor and loud music to quiet games of cards.
It will happen one day.
Yes. |

now 6 views, I never thought I'd see the day. Due to this momentous passing in history I will traverse the peninsula on Saturday to welcome in the 10,000 in Pohang. Texts have been sent and hot dates lined up, a long tea is waiting, and a list of tunes to download has been forwarded to the malboro.
It will be a lightening strike, in Saturday afternoon out again Sunday, Tis my solemn duty as the only Pohangsta on K turf.
I only pray to the Gods of Heavy Metal that the Chicken Man is back. |

| 10,024 views. History has been made. If this trend continues, Pohang will be the most visited tourist spot on the planet by the year 2027. Forget Hawaii and the Carribiean...Im going to Pohang!! |

Congratulations...
Pohang is fun. I live in Ulsan and sometimes go up for the weekend in Summer.
I like the sandwich shop downtown. Sometimes me and the GF would ride the motorbike from Ulsan over there just to get a good sandwich. |

| Yes, the sandwich shop is one of the many famous and historically important places in Pohang. But have you visited the Chicken Man?? He is the great great great great grandson of the last king of korea. He is currently selling divine chicken in order to save up enough to regain control of his country. |

Blue Meanie, when I was in Pohang, back in the good old days, we had an English teacher soccer team and we found a group of guys from POSTEC who also had a team of sorts. We played most Sundays in the summer. Great fun. The POSTEC guys were mostly engineers from Vietnam, Russia, and China so it was kind of the free world vs. the Communist ords. they usually won... |

Blue Meanie!!
Shape up man! If you can't find a team then start your own.
But, a fine young lady told me the teachers and Korean friends play something called fusball on Wednesday nights. It is limited time, 5 aside soccer. I will PM you numbers as the come to hand.
A famous Pohangsta (god bless his soul) started the team when I was there by going to postech and asking the student engineers if they wanted to play. Simple.
OK quick flash, as the bus took 7 hours to return to seoul.
I had a hot date last night and stumbled into "oliva". It is an intimate italian restaurant in the back alleys of Yukgori. There is only 5 tables and I suspect the only place in pohang where you can get a decent glass of Vino. Food was a s good as It gets for italian in Korea.
The New Giant step is in Ee-dong. not as cool as the previous but the owner's still a top hand and gave me free tequila all night.
There is a bar directly opposite the new cinema, called Whistler I think, that is gaining popularity with the teachers and locals.
Went for a stroll along songdo Beach this afternoon. I had the whole beach to myself and It was a cloudless day. Go there and eat some fish.
Any one wishing to visit the Beauty that is Pohang can do so much easier now thanks to the KTX. I got there in under 3 hours on saturday by KTXing to daegu. Then jump in a cab and yell Dong-Bu Yuk. Grab a bus and you'll be in Pohang an hour later. |

| God bless the KTX. Connecting Pohang to the rest of the world is the first step to a insuring a safer, more free world. |
