How do you compare culture with absolutes, or do you at all?
In other words, what do we base our cultural criteria on, on what makes a strong or a weak culture? Where do morals fit in in regards to cultures?
I have a hard time being overseas accepting some things I'd think were not only stupid back home, but ignorant. Should I then become ignorant like these people, people who believe in cutting and pushing in line, or should I be an example and maintain MY cultural beliefs?
The same goes for other things, such as not treating others equally in India or eating dogs or having sex outside of marriage. Though these be "part of cultural norms" could they be abberrations rather than the norm?
Give me some definitions on judging a strong culture, anyone. I don't buy this 5,000 years of civilization crap anymore. |
