Here are a few tidbits about the two tests.

TOEFL is still the most widely used test in the world to measure English proficiency (used at about 6,000 institutions) however IELTS is gaining popularity.

TOEFL still has many more authorized testing centres compared with IELTS.

More students took the TOEFL test in 2006 than IELTS (840,000 for TOEFL compared with 700,00 for IELTS).

IELTS is the test of choice for students seeking admission into universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, while TOEFL remains the test of choice for students seeking admission into universities in Canada and the U.S.

Your distinguishment of these two tests is very clear and useful.
I want to further my study in US so I will take TOEFL exam in August.
However, if a English major who are not going to study abroad wants to choose a test from these two. Which one do you think is better?

If I were majoring in English Literature and did not need TOEFL for university entrance or study abroad, I would consider the IELTS, but this is a matter of opinion.

Good luck,

Corey

I think IELTS is becoming more common with Nursing and Teaching schools. Most of the main universities want TOEFL.

Our school teaches IELTS and TOEFL and this is generally what happens.

There's an analysis of the TOEFL speaking test here: www.activeielts.com/IELTS_vs_TOEFL and you can compare it with www.activeielts.com/speaking
