Why is it that the world's navies, that cost the taxpayers of their various countries a vast amount of money every year, are unable to deal with piracy from Somalia?
In all of history piracy has not been tolerated, yet insurance companies today pay a lot of money to pirates.
Politicians the world over do nothing about it. They will not even allow the crews of ships passing through the area to have weapons with which to defend themselves.
Even on the infrequent occasions the pirates have been captured, they have usually been disarmed and released.
As far as I know, only India's navy has actually sunk a pirate ship, and the USA has killed a couple.
It is nonsensical to allow this to continue. There is supposed to be a war on terrorism. Where are all the millions of dollars paid in ransom (around $30 million US so far) going? Obviously it is going to buy better weapons for the pirates, but who is really behind it? |
