as if we had passed through the grave, and stood at God’s feet, equal

In the subjunctive mood, if we are talking about the fact contrary to the future or present, we often use the past simple tense. So, why this sentence use the past perfect tense?
Is it right to say : as if we passed through the grave, and stood at God's feet, equal. ?

Thanks!
