What does 'drown them out'mean? I understand 'them'refers to difficult headlines that Mrs. Clinton is facing.
What drew the most attention, however, was her response to a potential Sanders-Trump debate, which she said was not a serious possibility. And so it went in the final week before the unofficial start of summer, with Mrs. Clinton facing difficult headlines, and Mr. Trump choosing to drown them out. _________________ Hiromichi |

Well I searched for and read the article. It seems to say that Clinton is facing a lot of difficult headlines, but Trump, by holding a news conference, teasing about a debate with Bernie Sanders, etc., is "drowning out" Clinton's difficult headlines. ("drown out" in this case is similar to making so much noise you can't hear someone. For example, "The crowd was yelling so much they drowned out the speaker.") |
