What is the meaning of 'coy' in the text below?
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in June. His denials of Russian meddling have been coy, though he said that “free-spirited” hackers might have spontaneously contributed to “the fight against those who say bad things about Russia. _________________ Hiromichi |

I looked up the word in the dictionary, because I don't think we usually use it in a sentence like that. The dictionary gives the meaning "reluctant to give details, especially about something regarded as sensitive." so I would guess that's the meaning they wanted because Putin never really answered the question. Usually I have heard the word "coy" used in its other sense, "(especially with reference to a woman) making a pretense of shyness or modesty that is intended to be alluring." |
