The news shocked me.
Q1: Can I use this news...?
The meat is bad.
Q2: Can I use this meat...?
Are there any rules for this and that followed by uncountable nouns? |

Either "this" or "that" can be used in your two example sentences instead of "the". They are both okay with uncountable nouns. The difference is in the meaning. If you say, "This meat is bad." I would expect you to be pointing or referring to some particular meat.
For example: I don't want to eat in that restaurant because the meat is bad (it's the meat in that restaurant.)
This meat is bad. Please throw it out. (I would expect you to be indicating the meat at the time) |
