Oh, a homestay! Very good. You will have a great time. If you are not familiar with Japanese culture, I know a little bit, so here is some advice to make your stay a little easier (and minimize any faux pas):
Bring a gift from your home country for every person in the homestay house. Also a gift for every important person you will be working with (boss, assistant manager, etc.). French wine would be great, but also any knick knack (dish towel, oven mitt, scarf, tie) featuring famous scenes of your home, calendars, photo books or postcard sets of your home, etc. It's a way of saying Thank you for your hospitality and apologies for any inconvenience you might impose on them now or in the future.
You should know no shoes in the house, so bring slippers. But also, the WC will have its own slippers you wear in there and nowhere else in the house (called toilet slippers). And if they have a tatami room (the floor has traditional tatami mats), no slippers in there, only socks or bare feet.
Hopefully your host family's WC won't have an old-fashion squat toilet. But even if it doesn't, you may encounter some conveniences you are not used to such as big flush-little flush options (depending on how much water you need to flush), heated seats with bidet washlets, and spigots over the holding tanks for washing your hands with water that will later be used for flushing (a smart conservation idea).
On Valentine's Day, bring chocolate for every male you deal with on a daily basis. It is expected.
On the commuter trains, no eating or drinking, and talk quietly. And if you must use your cell phone, use text messaging only. It is so crowded on the trains, people create their own mini zones of privacy and try not to disturb others while texting, reading sports newspapers or hentai (naughty adult) comics or doing homework.
If you haven't had Japanese lessons yet, memorize these basic introductions for when you meet your host family and boss.
When you leave the office/school for the day, every day, say to the rest of the staff (who will probably be working late) "otsukaresama desh'ta".
Good luck and gambatte ne!

wow!! arigatou gozaimasu for all those advices!! I surely need them for my host family hehe
actually, they are the parents of one f my japanese friend living in Paris, so I'm gonna ask her a lot of questions about habits in her house, so with all your advices and hers, I hope I won't do anything rude (we french people are known to be rude in Japan )..
For work, I'll be a french teacher, and the school is french.. So all the people I'll work with are french. it'll be a french environment so I'm not scared to make mistakes, it won't be so complicated.. lucky!
I'm gonna read those pages about rules in Japan thanks!!! |
