PostPosted: Thu Jan 04, 2007 2:56 pm    Post subject: Saddam Hussein's Death on TV Reply with quote

So, Saddam Hussein was hanged on national television in the USA.

I find this sick and evil, because humans should NOT find joy in others' death! It's very immoral.

My friend and I were arguing about this yesterday. She said that just because reveling in others' death is immoral by MY moral standards, doesn't mean it's immoral by everyone's moral standards, so I "shouldn't judge" and it is OK for the news to show the death.
I said that no, reveling in others' death IS wrong; it's not just my opinion, and for the news to cater to that immorality is ALSO unethical. Similarly, if SOME people thought slavery was OK, the US shouldn't create a state where slavery is allowed because "those people have a right to own slaves if their moral standards permit it". Creating such a state would be unethical, and it would be catering to others' WRONG "opinions".
My friend, again, disagreed.

I thought this was an interesting argument that really got me fired up, so I thought I'd share it.

Anyone else have an opinion? I'd love to keep this going (politely, of course)...

I agree with you.
He was the only one in that video that showed any class at all.
150 years ago public executions were common. Now, most civilized countries don't have the death penalty at all.
The whole point of "justice" IS to judge people, so your friend is out in left field. Probably right field, given her views on slavery.

I didn't watch the video myself, so I can't comment on it.
Oh no-- I think she's TRYING to be lefty, but she doesn't really understand that some things are just plain WRONG (like reveling in death) and not just matters of opinion.
It's true, usually we lefties say "different people have different opinions", but it's not ALWAYS true, because some things are just wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely left-wing, probably moreso than anyone I've ever met, but that doesn't mean that I am accepting of people whose views are WRONG- not everything is a matter of opinion.

Broadcasting it on TV is horrible, low, and childish. That's what they are.

But Bush said: "I believe that God is behind my decisions."
So what can we do against God and the half of the world's weapons? Mr. Green

When the video was broadcasted, I was home with my older brother and my mother, and they began to talk things like "It's shocking for us, but I guess that for people in the Middle East it's not normal to show people been killed on TV".

I said, "hey, it's a prejudice! How can you possibly think that just because the death penalty exists in Iraq, everybody around there agrees with that? The death penalty exists in the USA, but I don't believe every single american agrees with it.

The war against Saddam started because G.W.Bush thought Saddam was responsible for the 11.9.
Then they caught Saddam and found out that he hasn't done anything according to 11.9., but they still hanged him because of another reason.
There are theories whether BinLaden was hired by Bush, to find a reason to kill Saddam, however they are only assumptions so better not to talk about them.

Sooo let's better talk about you and your friend...
You think that it's evil to celebrate other people's death, because this is against every moral standard, against the Bible, because Bible says that everybody has dignity, and against something like the "law of nature".

Your friend premises that there are more people who think this is moral than people who think this is immoral. According to her premise, she says that you should shut up and listen to the news.

And the you argued about your points. Did I get your point correctly?

As always, I think your opinion is correct. In every society there are rankings, lower ranking, higher ranking, people who has power to rule other people, who has more might. But above all rankings and administrations, justice should be the highest might.

The try of the Bush administration, to overwhelm the small injustice by an bigger injustice, is WRONG.

May I join the club??? Very Happy

I'm a 100% against death penalty, war, racism, slavery and all that rubbish that the human kind invented centuries ago. Iraq has oil, Bush wants it and Bush needs to keep war at work because war gives LOTS of money. So Bush wants to own Iraq and needed Saddam Hussein killed in order to make his plans work. Bush's a filthy prat, a coward and even if Hussein was another prat he didn't have any right to excibit his death or to kill him. Bush is a murderer, we all know that. He says he's doing the "war against terror", but he has done everything but that.

We should remember now, the ones who have really fought that war against terror and the first one on the list must be MAHATMA GANDHI!

Have a nice day!

I am not a fan of President Bush, and in fact I think he is the worst president in living memory. BUT:

I don't think Bush had anything to do with trying, sentencing, or executing Saddam Hussein. No one asked him when or where or how S.H. should be killed. If they had asked, he would not have known which days were sacred to Muslims and which were not.

Don't give him that much credit!
