There must be a kind of empathy toward speakers of other languages when they are in other countries as you've mentioned. It's a matter of respect. However, as Mutienjo said, knowing another language is an incredible plus nowadays.

A funny thing happening in my country, Colombia, is that many native speakers of English expect you to speak their country instead of the other way around. You're a weirdo if you don't understand their question in English, and many of them (not all) will think of it twice before starting a Spanish course! That's what I've perceived in the place where I work.

Despite globalisation, a significant number of people are reluctant to take steps in bilingual education. I guess that's a vital step to understand other people's cultures as well as how precious ours is and, of course, how to respect diversity.
