Could you tell me the fifference between " go across the desert " and " go through the desert"? Or are they the same?

With a big place like a desert, these words have very similar meanings.
"Through" can suggest actually coming out the other side, but otherwise the same.
With places other than deserts (and similar big spaces) there may be more difference between the meanings.
