What does "ask out of the gate" mean?
The details of the early draft of the letter include requirements that debate moderators not ask yes-or-no questions without time to respond, not ask candidates to ask questions of one another, and not ask candidates questions that require a raising of the hand.
That last point appears to have been put in place thanks to Donald J. Trump, who was the only person who raised his hand when asked out of the gate in the first debate, hosted by Fox News, about refusing to rule out a third-party run. _________________ Hiromichi |

I think it means it was the first question (like horses in a race that use a gate before the race starts) but I'm not sure. |

Lorikeet:
Thank you.
I googled to find out it is equivalent to " out of the starting gate " which means from or at the beginning. _________________ Hiromichi |
