I do not understand the captioned phrase.
“I don’t doubt that the media will do everything they can to frame the race as anybody but the proven conservative,” Mr. Cruz said, growing a bit irritated. “But you know, to win the nomination, you actually have to win states.” _________________ Hiromichi |

He says the media will do everything they can. They are going to say the election race should go to anybody but the one who has been proven to be the conservative (he claims that title for himself.) "frame the race as anybody" doesn't have meaning. It breaks up the sentence. "frame the race as" "anybody but the proven conservative" breaks up the sentence better. |

"anybody but x" means "non-x" So in this sentence a proven conservative is excluded from the race? _________________ Hiromichi |

Cruz believes he is the only "proven conservative" so he is saying they want anyone but him. (Although I'm not sure they want Trump either) |
