What does 'by hours' in the end mean? Not for hours?
American officials said the rescue mission was launched in the days after the professors, Kevin King, the American, and Timothy Weeks, the Australian, were taken at gunpoint on Aug. 7 from their vehicle in Kabul near the campus of the American University of Afghanistan, where they teach. The officials said the group of SEAL members, backed by Army Rangers, are believed to have missed the men by hours. _________________ Hiromichi |

I'm sorry I forgot to check this website for a while. It means the rescue mission was too late by hours, not by days. They must have moved them just before the rescue mission came. |

Lorikeet:
Thank you. I should have recalled a sentence like below.
・I missed the train by 3 minutes. _________________ Hiromichi |
