Dear Sir,

The following is from the article on the above webpage.

"They’re like America’s grandparents. I saw my grandparents in them,” Jim said. “And I made it a block before I pulled over and called the bank. And I asked them if I could pay off the past due amount.”

What does "make it a block" mean?

It means he was driving away, and he "made it a block" (he got as far as one block) before he pulled over and called the bank.
