Should 'by him' below be eliminated?

No. If you stick by someone, it means you are still supporting them, even if other people have changed their minds, for example. So he stuck by him while other people didn't support him any more.

Thank you. I got it. I should have read 'stuck by' as a phrasal verb. I mistakenly read it as passive voice.
