What does "define" below mean?
All of the assassination targets had one thing in common: They were members of the African National Congress who had spoken out against corruption in the party that defined their lives.

I had to read the article to get an idea. I think it means that these members defined their lives as being part of the African National Congress, but in speaking out against corruption in the party, they became targets for assassination. |
