No. By the time VYLs develop enough language (orally) in their L2 to make phonics instruction worthwhile, they've already learned how to read the alpabet), at least here in Chinasilencedobetter wrote:Are you teaching phonics?

'A Freq Dict of Am Eng.' ©2010 Routledge - comments anyone?
I'm surprised I've seen little mention of this dictionary here or elsewhere. Here's what one reviewer wrote: "The corpus itself is intended as a tool for learners, so in effect the FDCAE is the authors' guided tour through a powerful corpus-based learning tool. It can serve both as a standalone refe...

Re: Advice on addressing one slow student?
...an introductory adult ESL course Is it really an 'introductory' course? How 'false' a beginner is---the level previously attained---can dramatically affect their rate of re-attainment. If you've done a needs assessment, do their goals differ? Those needing English for employment prospects will b...

Question Quest (card game) - Heard of it / used it?
http://question-quest.com/how-to-play Given that this game developer is actively trying to promote this game, I'm surprised there's no mention of it here. I can see how the card graphics and game format would appeal to 8 - 14 yr olds but I'm sure many would take issue with the inclusion of complete ...

I voted 'no' because if you're teaching writing along with pronunciation, you may want to start with letters that share similar characteristics. If that's not the case, then following the alphabet is probably your best bet as you can use the alphabet song. BTW: For teaching phonics, check out this v...

Worthwhile post, Ballerina! ;)
I looked up the term for this pervasive problem here in Asia and it isn't restricted to the simple past nor to children. In most cases, students are taught the same Interlanguage Fossilization their Korean English teachers were taught. In China, English study material, college entrance, and proficie...

From Day 1 you should be introducing classroom language and language for routines. If presented well, they'll readily pick this up and eventually begin using it themselves. You can facilitate this process, for example, by asking volunteers to do things like close the door, hand out workbooks, etc. Y...

Re: Ideas for 6-7 yrs olds please!
I saw a grade 4 teacher in Canada use a French video of animals and their young which he knew would appeal to the kids--he pre-taught them some of the language.Kate in Toulouse wrote:Hi, I have a job teaching my daughter's French-speaking class of 6-7 yr olds.

In the past, I've used rolls of clear transparent vinyl shelf liner available in the kitchen accessories section of dept stores. Wide cellophane tape also works well for smaller playing-card sized flaschards. I don't care for 90% of the flashcards online nor much of the standard ELT graphics --it's ...

Assessment starts with clearly defined objectives and you shouldn't be restricting yourself to only one assessment tool or time with which to do so. I've been able to track down half a dozen e-books on the subject as schools and this forum have clearly not been very helpful. PM me and I'd be glad to...

How would you come up with a Survey of Young Learner Parents
Since I want to start teaching kids on my own this fall here in China, I need a much clearer understanding of the attitudes and opinions of parents. It's always been Chinese teaching staff who communicate with parents on a regular basis. It's clear parents care little about the goings on in the scho...
