Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. It depends on the situations that you may meet. As the upstairs say, if you have a lot time to communicate with them, the first way is good. I think you can combine two methods together.

beijing is more traditional. Buildings : hutongs, forbidden city , summer place .

Shanghai is a mixed of west and east culture, many foreigners feel it is easier to live in shanghai.

Its up to you whether you want Beijing or shanghai but many foreigners find beijing a bit boring.
