I have to agree with Jen. I am very nervous about going into a classroom and teaching ESL. I am afraid that the students will not make any progress because I have no experience. I would appreciate any and all suggestions and strategies for when I do go into a classroom for the first time.

Genie, I have to agree with Jen, I never thought about them talking about the teacher and or students in their native language. I guess like Jen and Tammy I would keep a Spanish dictionary with me and look up words that I hear. I would also listen for a child's name. If someone suggests something el...

Tammy, I was wondering the same thing myself. I think that it would be difficult to teach children who are speaking more than one language. It is probably going to be hard enough to teach English and Spanish, so I cannot imagine teaching children who speak other languages. I hope this makes sense. H...

Blanca, I have to agree with Jennifer and Itza, I think that you should start with Spanish and gradually introduce English. I think that this bilingual course will be great for your school. I know you will be a great teacher. I also know that all the teachers there will be a tremendous help to you. ...

It would be great to find out what we could do now before we are teachers. Let me know if you find out somethin...

Leslie and Jen, Like both of you, I was wondering what ESL certification was going to do for me. Is it worth it? I called my daughter's kindergarten teacher(I live in Center, Texas) and she said that in this district, all teachers had to be ESL certified to even have Spanish children in their classe...

Genie, I have to agree with you. I was forced into taking Spanish in the 6th grade because my parents did not want me in the band. I hated Spanish from day 1. The teacher was strictly an English speaking teacher and had no clue how to speak Spanish. I stayed with Spanish about 6 weeks and dropped it...
