University Talk
Help, experienced academicians. After two years of teaching in university, I haven't learned to interpret the foreign language called "departmentese" I've taught in University for two years so I'm still very much a junior in my department. When I was bright-eyed and new, the seniors were raving abou...

Hi. I'm about to finish my MA in English Language Education with major in Second Language teaching in the Philippines. My projected graduation is June of this year. I hope to get on the tenure track in the academe and so I know a PhD will be necessary. But as early as now, I'd really like to know wh...

I think your problem comes from that your students already know how to compose work with proper grammar but haven't been accustomed to writing conventions. I mean, I think sentences are long because when they speak, they don't punctuate anyway. So they might be having difficulties identifying senten...

Quite honestly, I don't believe in English Speaking campaigns and there is no proof that they are effective at all. But each school has its own policies that we MIGHT be powerless to change. That method of spying on each other has worked for the Chinese for centuries (but I'm not saying it's the bes...

Putting on your teacher face
We teachers put on a face in front of our students no matter how bad the situation outside the classroom is. When I'm having a bad day, I usually drop by the rest room to check my smile and tell myself that my students have nothing to do with how bad a I feel. Deep breath, open the door, nice sunny ...

Schegloff et all (1977) on repair
Hi everyone! I'm working on my masteral thesis on repair and I can't seem to find the pioneering article of Schegloff et al. Would anyone happen to have a copy of the article? Schegloff, E.A., Jefferson, G., & Sacks, H. (1977). The preference for self- correction in the organization of repair in con...

Sometimes, it will help to lay down your learning goals and plans so the students know where you're going for the day's lesson. When my students know the point of the lesson, they usually appreciate it more. However, you will lose the element of surprise and I know a lot of us *HATE* to be predictab...

I don't approve of "target language campaigns." In grade school and high school, students were punished by making them contribute 1 peso to the class fund for every L1 word uttered. I think not being able to revert to L1 causes a lot of language anxiety whether or not the student will be penalized. ...

I agree with an earlier post about the difference between the conventions of written and spoken English. Spoken English seems to be more syntactically forgiving and any inconsistencies in syntax may be attributed to the context in which is was spoken. Once the utterance has been written of course, t...

Multimedia and technology certainly have a place in language learning and teaching provided that they are used correctly. Some studies show, however, that too much multimedia make for a shorter attention span. While teaching university students, I found that a whiteboard and marker or chalk and chal...

Why don't you try teaching them the version that's most common in their immediate context? For example, if they are learning GAE, teach them the version that's common in that standard. If for example, they are using EIL (English as an International Language), you will need to teach them the relevant...

Truth be told, I don't see any problems with students using their L1 when communicating with each other. In task oriented activities, it makes it possible for more advanced students to help those with difficulties. I think the key here is to strike a balance between language classroom contexts. My l...
