What about sending the ppt to your student's email one or two days before the class and spending time in class practicing the use of the vocabulary? Another thing, you can try projecting only the pictures and writing down the terms on the board. Definitely cover the lamp when you want your students ...

I think that some L1 in certain cases won't hurt. It rather easens the transition at least for beginners, but you should also encourage your students to use L2 specially in questions asking for permission to go to the bathroom, asking for the meaning of a word, etcetc.

Is that teacher's training? I also agree that you have to narrow down your topic, for example where? and what kind? There's also different English teaching training, there are courses for native teachers and there's also Professional Training for non-native students. I would be happy to help you if ...

I would advise you to go for a CELTA, here in Chile they're more prestigious.
But if you're really serious about TEFL there's a Certificate program at funiber www.funiber.org
I'm doing a MATEFL there and it is a serious organization.

What about his family? Maybe his family is not being supportive enough. Here in Chile, most kids that do badly at school have unsupportive families as well.

And I complain about teaching 30 students!!!
I think that the suggestion about forgetting communicative method is absolutely right! Communicative method only works with few students. You should try lots of drilling and roleplaying in groups. Mostly situational English I think.

Oh, and pairworking.
