Hi BK Prince Don't get discouraged. Loads of new teachers find themselves in similar situations, unfortunately. With no TESL, TEFL experience or training, looks like you're going to have to train yourself somewhat - by finding ideas online and by learning from other teachers. Find the more experienc...

Ground to a halt

When I first became an EFL/ESL teacher in 2001, I came across Dave's ESL Cafe. It seemed like the number one place online to find all the answers and advice I needed. Nowadays it's a different story. This forum seems to have ground to a halt. I mean - sometimes I post on here and then forget about m...

Here in Bangkok, there are comedy errors to be read everywhere.

For example, I've seen a menu offering 'crap soup' (crab soup)

Here's the solution. A man bought a pub called 'The Horse and Cart'. He decided the sign looked a bit old and faded, so he contacted a local artist and hired him to paint a new sign. When the new sign was delivered, the pub owner wasn't happy and refused to pay. "What's wrong?" asked the artist. "Th...

That's a good attempt - but your five 'and's are separated by other words.

I'm looking for a grammatically correct sentence that has 5 ands in a row.

So something like this:

bla bla bla bla bla and and and and and bla bla bla.

A puzzle for English teachers

Can you make a grammatically correct sentence that uses the word 'and' five times consecutively? So somewhere in your sentence we will see 'and and and and and'. The 5 'ands' can't be interrupted by other words, but you can use punctuation to your advantage. Brian COMICS for your students: www.gramm...

PHRAZZLE ME!

Hello all, Some of you may have seen PHRAZZLE ME! mentioned in this forum recently. It's a new game that's similar to Scrabble - except players use word pieces to build sentences instead of letter tiles to build words. The concept is simple but such a great idea - I'm sure you can imagine, it's an e...

Someone gave me a great drama activity a few years back - worked very well with my pre-intermediate teens. There were a selection of fairly simple dialogues. Things like: I've got something to tell you. Is it bad news? Yes. It's bad news. Really? What is it. Tell me! You're not going to like it. Tha...

Green Eggs and Ham

For those of you who teach young learners, especially those just learning to read ... Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss This book is excellent for beginners. It has only 50 different words and uses lots of repetition and rhyme that makes it a lot of fun to read aloud. I've just added a resource pack t...

For remember the difference between left and right ... You write with your right, and what's left if your left. (of course this doesn't work for 'lefties' like me!) From headway pre-intermediate ... a short poem for irregular comparatives and superlatives: good better best never never rest til your ...

Just make a trivia quiz - and do it pub quiz style with students in teams of 3 or 4. Give them a minute to discuss after each question. They don't call out their answers ... they write them down. Highest score wins and if you want to extend it, have more questions or have more than one round. So you...

'Word Up' is a commercial ESL board game, and it's excellent. I've used it many times in class as an end of course fun activity. It's kind of like trivial pursuit for ESL students, and the questions come in 5 levels of difficulty. My students really enjoy it. Brian COMICS for your students ... www.g...
