Keeping your English Sharp
I would make a point of reading in English every night before bed. It just gets you back in that mode. You could also make a point of watching at least one program a day in English. This can be done online. I don't think you could ever forget your English, but words tend to not come as quickly when ...

Small class
It can be tough to have just two. Sometimes too much quietness is bad! I would have the students play games like concentration, hangman or pictionary to work on vocabulary. For readings you can have the students match questions from the passage to the answers you put on index cards. To work on pronu...

Class Ideas
Does anyone have any experience teaching English for construction workers? I was approached to teach for a local company's non English speaking employees. The manager is trying to get some of his long term guys to communicate better in English. Thanks! Andrew Lawton http://drewseslfluencylessons.com

Student trouble
Hello, Practice and repetition are the only ways that the English they are learning is going to sink in. I would make sure to always have a warm up that covers the main topics covered in the previous lesson. Find out their interests and try to have them reading passages that cover these areas. If th...

Mixed level class
Hello, This is a common problem for ESL teachers. It seems to always work out that we get classes with students at different levels. I would have my stronger students working with the weaker students when you do group activities. Students learn a lot from their peers. If the class is reading a passa...

Students
Hello, I have had classes that are similar to what you are describibg. In that kind of a class you really can't force them to do homework like you maybe could for kids in school. I have had success in the past if I assign homework that will be covered the first ten minutes of class. I call on each s...

Large Classes
Hello, I've never had classes that large, but I I have had 30 or so students in a room that didn't allow for movement. I use a lot of activities too, so I had to change some things up. Like you mentioned, students wind up with the same partner every time for speaking activities. I would assign them ...

English Errors
I love these! I will show them to my class and we will look for the errors together. I especially like the one on "oil grass". I teach in Austin TX. I teach Spanish down here too. All over TX you will see signs in Spanish and English. I am amazed at some of the errors I see in translation. You'd thi...

Class
Hello, I assume you are not in the US. I can't think of a school here that would offer a class like that. If it is here, I would charge at least $40 an hour. I get paid about $35 an hour for classes of about 20 for a community college continuing ed class in Austin TX. Good luck with that. It sounds ...

In need of Language Learning Activities with Music
Hello all, I am teaching a 5 day a week three hour class this summer and I am in need of some good activities with music. My class is intermediate level and they work hard. The problem is this is one my quietest classes ever. Things are way to mellow so I want to livin it up a bit. A few of my stude...

Sounds like a great idea. I wish I could teach a class like that and have another teacher concentrate on the grammar in the morning just for a change of pace. I think you'llll find that you will be correcting what your students write a lot. That is not a bad thing. Just have them right four or five ...

Helping your kids to become bilingual
I teach Spanish at the college level in Texas. My wife speaks no Spanish, so I don't speak a lot of Spanish at home. Everyone asks why my kids are not bilingual since I am. I should make more of an effort to speak Spanish around my kids. My youngest is 5 months and I have started a routine to get he...
